Sci-Fi fan of 50 years here, so I've seen a lot of it. It starts off just 'okay' but then steadily improves. Yes, some of the characters are annoying, but then drama formula writing always has a wide range of characters so that is only to be expected nowadays.
With so much excellent stuff available on Netflix and other platforms, something has to be good in order to keep me watching. This one did, the first episode was interesting enough to make me come back for another episode. I'm pleased I did because, as I write this, I have two episodes left and can't wait to see them.
So bad even the AI constantly looks sad. Got to be the worst crew of a spacecraft ever.
It is hard to parse just how bad this writing is. A talented enough cast, but what were they thinking? Even ignoring some glaringly stupid basic science mistakes which were needless with this kind of budget.
A crew of pouty, whiny 20 somethings who don't wear uniforms and have zero discipline are sent off to save the Earth. Did competent and sane people go instinct for some reason? Was there some massive planetary extinction event that wiped out everyone of intellect and reason?
I love starship shows. I really do. I love them so much I am going to continue watching this complete trainwreck. I may, however, be rooting for every single person to die terrible and gory deaths.
Given two stars because at least every single character is believably loathsome and stupid so I can only assume is sticking to the script pretty well. The sets are also decent.

Couldn't continue watching after the first episode. It just wasn't thought through. Just too many questions. An important mission with this team with such unlikeable characters? How? Why? Did who ever send them form a team so incompetent? Did they matched their skills and personalities? Did the team know eachother beforehand? Did they train together before send into oblivion for an important space mission? Truly, I'm amazed at how stupid this is.
Nope, not for me.
I love sci-fi. I'm most all it's forms...if done well. Even B rated ones can be fun.
But millennial drama is not for me. It's this kind of recipe that killed stargate universe
The alien akkai are so nebulous in manifestation that it makes the enemy gimmicky. Especially this arm chair psychiatrist approach. And then I'm a cheap way of making it not be a total soap opera...they throw out a bunch of F bombs to make the show seem tough and manly. But really it comes across stupid and I'll timed (if needed at all)
Just seems like the dream episodes that a sci-fi show will do once or twice within 5 seasons. Except, for Thai show....every episode is turning out to be this. Thank heavens Foundation and Dune are out and so I have a real sci fi show to watch.

- TriviaThe title is a reference to an interstellar radio message in which NASA transmitted the song "Across the Universe" by The Beatles in the direction of the star Polaris, located 431 light years from Earth, on February 4, 2008.
- GoofsThe technique used by Salvare to slingshot around the star makes no sense. The purpose of the sling shot maneuver is to increase the speed of your ship above your current speed using the gravity of another object. There's little point in reducing your speed to sub-light (William dropped them to sub-light before awakening Niko) so that you can sling shot to back to the +light speed you were traveling at in the first place. Not to mention the fact that the sling shot maneuver is not accomplished by getting as close to a star as you can, nor are multiple orbits around the star beneficial. While this error might be forgivable there nothing gained by using an incorrect procedure when the correct one could have them arrive at the same plot point.

Ian Yerxa: You know, Niko... were the situation reversed, I'm not sure I'd be quite as magnanimous with you.
Niko Breckinridge: No?
Ian Yerxa: No.
