A fading bromance derails a budding romance in "Space Waves," a gentle comedy-drama about two best friends' quest to become the #1 rated podcast on iTunes. An iconic microwave tower, a cherry red Mustang, and a brainless skateboarding video provide the eye candy for this surprisingly good film.
Shot entirely on location in rural Northern California, the story plays out so naturally that I only noticed in retrospect that there was no sex, violence or swearing in the film. Didn't miss it.
Writer-director Spencer Whiteout's semi-autobiographical script is a genuinely funny, dramatic, romantic, G-rated, coming-of-age story of teenage best friends Joey (Rudy Pankow) and Marvin (Andrew Gabriel), Marvin's neglected girlfriend Sawyer (Andie Mueller), and the hilarious, scene-stealing Duke Skylander (Tyson Pestner) who is making a brainless, skateboarding movie.

Rare are movies centered on friendship, I could definitely relate and so can anyone who ever had a hard time growing out of the past and moving to whatever life has to offer. Nobody prepares you for the way relationships die over time, just from having different ambitions. Childhood friends are the hardest to let go. I love how the movie just did not take itself seriously yet managed to enlighten a very simple and essential message : little things matter. Nostalgia is eternal, but what you focus on should be the best memories, no matter how small.
I did have a hard time with the absurdity of certain scenes, very cartoonesque moments that I think may have been a decision related to the 80s throwback, but I do love the overall fashion chosen for the characters. Gave me very nice and friendly summer vibes. That and the fact that obviously everybody had fun making the movie and it shows. Also that type of setting does make the movie timeless, and that is great because the whole friendship plot is relatable to any generation.
I believe this has potential for a sequel... Either way I will definitely stay tuned for the crew's next productions. Big up to you all !

There's so many movies about romantic breakups but hardly any about best friend breakups.
Space Waves is about letting go of how things were, embracing how things are, and knowing that although times change, friendship and adventure can be found in every season of life.

...and brought the 80s back. What a fun way to relive a moment in time, just as if it was yesterday. You nailed every cliche that made back in the day, the day.
