I decided to give it a shot. Why not? Nobody can actually judge a show based only on a trailer. I didn't have any expectations whatsoever and honestly hoped to enjoy the episode and, to be fair, I liked some if its aspects such as the atmosphere, decorations and costumes but the visual part of this episode wasn't able to cover the weak parts, of course, such as bad writing and characters I couldn't actually care about. The final twist was too obvious and the episode was boring in general.
2.5 out of 5 stars.
First, the episode is a like a prequel with Kate coming back to Gotham after her father sent her away. Sees that her former lover is kidnapped by a group of bad guys led by Alice. Meanwhile, Alice and Kate had some sort of history. Kate finds Batmans cave and decides to take over as Batwoman.
Not really much inspiration of a character overcoming her odds and being a hero. The episode is filled with some decent action and fight sequences. Nothing really new with the arrowverse. The script and direction is terribly put together. Some flash backs of Kate as a child and the accident that haunts her. Or flash back when her love interest left her for her school.
Episode 1 is not a great start. It lacks the origin and inspirational build up with the character. It has some action which is entertaining. The script is filled with cringy dialogue which makes it cheesy.

Comic book fan since the 70's but clearly I'm not the target audience for this show. Weak cast trying to do their best with even weaker writing. Just no.
It's simplistic and basic. It's not awful or spectacular. There are moments that could use improvement, and there are moments that seem impressive and worth exploring.
I particularly am interested in Sophie, Catherine, and Mary's stories; I'd love to see them done right. I also wonder if Luke will be subjected to the errand tech boy trope; I hope not. It'd be nice if he were both geeky and suave (it's possible!), and not get stepped on by the white woman (it's a common trope among white feminist shows led by white women to have their white leads step on the men of color).
I hope by episode three, Rose's performance improves because in this episode she felt extremely stiff and dry. I've read some reviews by critics saying her performance is the same in episode two. This is my only problem with this show.
It's a nice, gritty and action/adventurous gothic noir superhero series. It fits in with the Arrowverse perfectly. It carries the same flaws and strengths as the Arrowverse, and it definitely feels niche. I particularly like to see Black women and Asian women in diverse roles. I hope they are all fully fleshed out and done justice.

I have not seen Ruby Rose in anything except elseworlds crossover and John Wick so I really didn't realize how terrible of an actress she is. I prefer her in John Wick since she had no lines. Wow she is bad and I don't understand how she got her own show. So much talent out there and Ruby Rose was picked for the role. I can't expect someone as talentless as her to keep this series going.
While we're on the subject of acting, pretty much everyone was bad. The girl who played Alice was too much and way over the top. Everyone else was just wooden and not worthy of being remembered. I found myself bored and wishing for time to go faster so it would just be over.
If they want this show to continue they better step it up the rest of the season and give the wokeness a rest. Even woke people are getting tired of it. Just give me a good story with compelling characters and acting.
