As ever with writers like Simon and Pelicanos, the change associated with the passage of time is in strong focus. Certain characters and attitudes have evolved, but key familiar traits are still preset. Everyone looks and acts more tired and ground down by life. Everything from governance level downward is introduced perfectly.

The fear associated with the AIDS crisis is used very well in several scenes and it makes you want to find out how it will impact the lives of all characters in the sex industry and homosexual community.

The filmmakers use fashion and music wonderfully to mark the period. Some of the characters could not look more quintessentially 80s.

All actors are on great form as always and the visuals are as amazing as ever.
