The last empress was a long drama to follow, but it was worth it. At first, the execution was a bit off, especially when it came to the transformation of the main character, which was just unrealistic in such short period of time, not to mention that he looked nothing like his old self (he even got taller....). I was actually considering dropping it, but the story somehow was intriguing. I wanted for Sunny to get revenge and become a strong character and she did. So, I wasn't disappointed there. I had mixed feelings about the romance with the emperor though. For the first half he was the ultimate bad guy, almost psychotic to the core. And then he became with lovable character that you couldn't help feel sorry for him, But, does that erase everything that he did in the past? Well, he wasn't the only character that followed that pattern in this drama. Other than that, the performances were really good, the plot full of action, suspence and thrill, plut it was fast paced.
I don't understand why it has such a low rating. It is very entertaining. Its more like a soap drama and honestly I enjoyed it so much. It has the exact type of drama that keeps you on the edge even though in hindsight it has many plot holes. Jang Nara was awesome in it. Sung rok's acting is insane, his character development was so good. I hope there was a happy ending but welp as the title suggests it was supposed to be like this.
I have to admit, I could only watch 3 episodes. Most other K-Dramas plots revolve around the uber rich in Korea, but this series has tried to take it to the next level of Korean high society. Even though it looks like it went for 52 episodes, so it must have been popular for the Korean market, but I think it must struggle with Westerners, especially Europeans, who have actually royal families to follow in real life. I've decided to choose another K-Drama to spend my viewing time on and not waste any more time on this one, but if you're new to K-Drama, you may find this watchable, because it does use all the formula for K-Dramas.
Penthouse fans check this out! Entertaining and often very funny comedy and satire with a revenge melodrama thrown in. Some parts of this show reminds one of a certain real royal family.
For fans of Penthouse the same writer penned this outrageously over the top and very funny show. This is actually funnier than Penthouse especially the parts with the young princess.
The cast is good. Theatrical actor Shin Sung Rok is just right as the Emperor since it is a theatrical role with monstrous behavior and comedy side by side. Famous singer Jang Na Ra is sweet as the empress. Beautiful Elijah Lee is so stunning as the antagonist. Choi Jin Hyuk is quite good too as Na Wang Shik the man with a mission. The girl who plays the young princess has the funniest lines. The Empress Dowager is good too - not an easy role to play.
It's a fun and thrilling ride that makes the 26 episodes go by like a breeze.

I am surprised to see such low rating of this show. I think it was very well balanced and brilliantly executed. The character arc was beautifully developed. Even though longer than the normal Korean dramas, it didn't lose its charm. Also loved the way they didn't try to needlessly glamorise everything.
