I'm not even sure how to articulate all that this show represents. It so perfectly sums up the Latino American experience. Growing up Mexican American there's always that struggle to not only honor our forefathers but also finding a way to acknowledge and honor our Latin culture in a way that was more than just stereotypically Latin via our dancing, and amazing cuisine. I was truly moved by this special. He tapped into the part of my that feels always slightly underrepresented and disenfranchised by America. But also reminded me that inside my vains is the blood of warriors, mathematicians, astronomers, genius engineers, and tireless revolutionaries. This show should be required watching for all Americans.
I've seen John on screen before, but never in the context of a stage - and what a discovery that was. The flow and pace of his performance is phenomenal. He overshoots just a little here and there, but his style of storytelling through the prism of many personas and cultures is hands down outstanding.
Caught this on Netflix streaming and was blown away. This is not for the faint hearted. From start to end, it takes a very very unique and highly effective intelligence to be able to string all historical facts and/or influences, mash it with relevant humor and animated impressions, and then proceed to keep a classroom audience riveted for more than 90 minutes, is in itself, historic. Even those with attention deficit syndrome would have had succumbed to his magic. I thoroughly enjoyed this powerfully crafted "history lesson" for his tribe and felt empowered to apply the motivation of healthy self respect in all aspects of life, regardless of race. John's exquisite talent is evident and given the right perspective, Emmy worthy. History is full of ugly, evil and forgotten injustices but invaluable lessons learnt can shape and decide different destinies toward self greatness. P
Any student under this class should have no problems graduating with distinction. Hope this special is used as a template to start a new change movement for a new awareness and brighter future beginning for all marginalized humanity. Gracias Professor John!
A few minutes into it, I realized the format is going to be interesting. It was an eye-opening masterpiece - hundred years worth of history shrunk into 1.5 hours. It conjured curiosity and feelings about the sad parts of history that are left untold in classrooms. My 10-year-old actually came out to sit with me and watched the whole show! I didn't mind my kid hearing some cursing here and there because he would probably never learn the history he watched John talked about at school. Thanks to John Leguizamo for such an amazing show. This is a must watch.
