Very chilling episode. Not as great as the previous episode but a damn great episode! Further proves that alpha is a great villain
I know I wasn't the only one thinking of the similarities between this episode of The Walking Dead and the lead up to the Long Night episode on Game of Thrones last year. The tone, character choices, and even placement of a character singing a song felt eerily similar. The good thing is, the episode was stellar besides those facts.
For the first time since last year's "heads on spikes" episode, I truly felt like some of the fan-favorites were vulnerable to be killed off. Not that I legitimately believe AMC would knock out either Daryl or Carol, but at least the writing and direction made you think something bad could happen to them or any of the other main cast who were located outside of Hilltop as The Whisperers moved in.
I loved the use of Negan's tactic of blocking their way out via the roads, just as he did in the season 6 finale, giving the heads up to the crew that he has apparently switched sides. But it does seem as though Judith could be the wild card in all this if she gets in trouble and Negan is alerted. Perhaps he's the one who saves the day and kills Alpha to save Judith, as she seems to be the only one he cares about amongst the main crew.
But it also begs the question of if this will be the end to the Whisperer War or is it really just getting started? I love the conflict, but I also don't hate the idea that The Walking Dead may end this arc way earlier than they usually do, especially when you think about how stale people thought the war against The Saviors felt. At the very least, we know someone big is going down next week.

At Hilltop, Eugene has a long conversation with Stephanie and proposes to meet her wherever she wants in Virginia and she promises to talk to her fellow people about their encounter. Meanwhile Aiden and Earl are improving their defenses when a group from Alexandria arrives with Mary. Then Daryl and Lydia arrive and disclose that Alpha, the Whisperers and the horde of walkers are coming. Daryl flees with the children but finds that the road is blocked. They decide to stay at Hilltop and fight the enemy.
"Morning Star" is a great episode with a full of action and cliffhanger ending. The future encounter of Eugene and Stephanie is promising. But the association of Negan and Alpha is dangerous for the communities. My vote is eight.

Note: On 09 January 2024, I saw this episode again.

- TriviaWhen Judith called Michonne she called her Daito. Daito and Shaito refer to a long and short katana.
- GoofsThe episode's title comes from the name of a weapon. But the weapon used by Daryl was actually a ball-and-chain flail, not a morning star. Which is actually a wooden shaft with an attached metal ball adorned with spikes, there is no chain.
