In this first episode, we see the inadequacy and in ability of the police to do anything towards finding little Madeleine. They stated plainly that it's not a crime for a person to disappear, and refused to investigate. Within the first few hours they had to be called twice before they agreed to respond, before that they refused to send even a single officer to the scene.

I would never go to a country like Portugal, where crime is rampant, kidnappings are so common, and police look the other way.
