The Last Man on Earth (1964): Watched it again last night. It holds up well and is perhaps the most faithful adaptation of the 1954 novel I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.. 1968, Vincent Price is superb as the obsessed last human, Dr. Robert Morgan as he hunts down vampires, using garlic and mirrors to repel them. Turning wooden stakes in a lathe to kill them. These are vampires created by a virus though and there are scientific explanations for much of what occurs. Morgan has flashbacks as to how the plague developed and the loss of his family. A colleague/friend now lays siege to Morgan's house at night along with others of the undead. And undead they are, they rise from the grave, some are smarter/stronger than others. Most move like zombies. But a second time of changes is arriving. Still well worth watching. Directed by Sidney Salkow and Ubaldo Ragona, written in part by Matheson, but he was dissatisfied with the result and chose to be credited under the alias "Logan Swanson". William Leicester, Furio M. Monetti, and Ubaldo Ragona finished the script.. 7.5/10.
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey: If Terry Gilliam ever directed a Rom/com Fantasy film then it might have turned out like this. Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie are relentlessly pushed together by a car rental company which is also an undercover dating agency, but the people who run the agency, Kevin Kline and Phoebe Waller-Bridge have magical powers. After failing to link up at a wedding, Robbie and Farrell are tricked into sharing a car and encounter a series if doorways along a highway, These bring them back to the recent past and their youth, we even get a hilarious high school musical, But there are also serious link usps where they can relive certain events and meet their parents again. You may not be able to change the past but you can have a different experience, Both laugh out loud funny and bittersweet this Rom/Com has derious elements. Well worth watching though it might have taken on too wide a canvas to achieve its full potential. Directed by Kogonada and Written by Seth Reiss. 7.5/10.
SCP: Overlord: The Secure Contain Protect Foundation has a worldwide mandate to investigate anomalous events and entities. It sends a Mobile Taskforce in to investigate the farmhouse HQ of an esoteric cult. Even from a distance levitating figures can be seen above the house. Inside there is a reality dysfunction as the soldiers come under attack from invisible enemies. Great effects and action are delivered considering the budget was less than $25k. These are Fortean troopers at war with Lovecraftian acolytes and entities. Just 35 minutes long but it packs a punch. Looking forward to viewing more short films in this series. Director Stephen Hancock. Writer Evan Muir. 8/10.
