I used to catch this on tv marathons in the early 00's as a kid and while I remember liking it, I didn't necessarily love it. It was a staple in millenial halloween Disney Channel tv lineups. 20 something years later and it's still a really goofy, enjoyable time. Normally kids movies with low stakes and silly costumes are eyeroll-worthy but this one has just enough 90's tropes and cheese to make it a fun time. The "hide the monster" trope was getting close to it's end by 1997 but this movie does it in such a carefree way that it's hilarious to watch. The extent of most of Bill Fagerbakke as the mummy's acting boils down to goofy moan sounds while flailing and stumbling around, but without any actual lines that aren't muffled, he really communicated the emotions and motivations of the mummy well and impactfully. I really never got any second hand embarrassment which many 90's kids movies tend to produce. It's all very tongue-in-cheek and just a romp. Now I remember why despite not recalling distinct scenes from the movie itself, I still held fond feelings for this movie all these years later. With it's strange sense of heart, friendship themes and a classic, surprisingly touching 90's movie ending, it's no mystery why this movie resonated with people to this day and thank goodness it was resurrected from the DVD afterlife- with the full thing being available for free on Youtube through a third-party poster. So thanks, mystery person for excavating this literal mummy of a movie from the Disney crypt.
Feels like a good toe-dip back into theatrical 2D animation. It's no blockbuster but it's a nice looking 2D animated movie in theaters in 2025. I'll take it. Good voices, good and great animation, beautiful painted backgrounds, fun music and sight gags that call back to classic Looney Tunes...The story is a little strange and feels a tad restricted, but thems the ropes. Lotta talented names in the credits so it was good to see that people got work. Kids will enjoy the colors, low brow humor and characters while adults will enjoy most of those three things but also the nostalgia and artistry on all fronts that went into making this. Long live 2D animation!
