  • Literally excellent

Finally something from a streamer that goes into the dark underbellies of British culture In an unstylised way. Breathtakingly shot and structured. Stellar performances from everyone in it.

This could only be British. There isn't an ounce of the usual turgid mid Atlantic Netflix style.

Also note. No music. Music often takes you away from the feeling of reality in these series.

This series is TV as an art form as it moves you and enables empathy for all characters (as well as some disgust). It also makes the relevant points about teh likes of Tate's incel culture.

Just watch all four episode at one sitting. .

  • Amusing and warm

This is an amusing and warm depiction of an England that never quite existed. After decades of war and recession a film such as this must have evoked a warmth and misremembered nostalgia in its viewers, its characters being English archtetypes (squire, major, worker etc). That was the England they had fought for.

The film is neatly and efficiently directed, the script is funny and each character actor knows how and when to deliver their line. The pacing of the dialogue is good. The depiction of this green and pleasent land is rich and verdant.

Two sad things to note. From this era we now only see this type of line as a heritage line, what a shame villages don't have light rail. And also note how power to run a village has moved from the people who live there to faceless bearcats in Whitehall. That's a change we should work hard to reverse. It also shows the power of these old films to record history.

  • The cast is amazing

Worth watching solely for the cast really... young Ritchie Cunningham and Beau Bridges... also the super hot giant groovy chicks and an amazing young Toni basil. Death by snoo snoo I guess.

Story wise it's the usual nonsense from low budget films like this. It has its very basic charms and is really these days a hangover watch. As one gets older then one enjoys more the art that was produced in the decade of your birth. This is one of those films where people of a certain age will get a certain wry smile while watching.

Looks like it's shot on the standard backlog, think Hill valley and 1960s Gotham. It seems to include early Lord of the rings tricks for the enlarged dog.

    Great twangy guitar led music.
