That's a story on its own and has in my eyes nothing to do with the original plot. You can watch it as a mediocre fairy tale movie, nothing more, nothing less. Rachel Zegler doesn't embody the grace and pureness that the original character had. The other actors aren't standing out with their performances either.
I binge watched the French original series. I watched the American pilot episode. I can say the French protagonist seems more authentic than the American one. I don't buy the American actresses behavior - it's more play pretend. And I had to smile a bit about the producers not even having changed the names of the French series characters for the American setting. I think the series can be worth a watch if you don't know the original one. I was comparing characters and action the whole time. I'm also not sure whether the plot makes sense within the American setting as much as it does in the original show.
I enjoyed the short series without expecting too much. I read many begrudging reviews on the show in advance. It definitely has a plot which is not too hard to follow and entertaining on a dramatical level.
For me it's far away from a true Sci-Fi movie.
In first instance the show deals with the relationship between the family members of the female astronaut. At the second glance there is a mystical secret that has to be revealed and with it comes a political problem that has to be solved.
The comments of other reviewers concerning the psychological instability of the female astronaut not being checked on in Germany is nonsense. The medical records belong to the patient and as one learns the astronaut is hiding her secret by destroying her medical report after having had a psychotic issue linked to drugs which she just took once.
All in all an utterly enjoyable mini series.
