Haven't reviewed in a while, but thought I'd give my 2 cents on this. Maybe what's missing is a voice over (from a director/productiin) describing the goal of the show, the procedures and goals of the investigators, etc. I feel like a camera is going along with this team of detectives that are working on multiple cases at a time and showing you their aprocess and how they come too close each case, somewhat in real time. This means that each episode is not as focused as dateline/48hts (of course my faves), and I don't think it is scripted, but may involve reshoots with some victims or witnesses. I think the purpose is to show *how* this lead detective finds people in this rather rough environment of Columbia, South Carolina, granted, all police investigations are slow as you have to have enough evidence to prosecute someone. I think it also is humanizing the *experience* for her and the victim and their families, the witnesses or others affected. Being from a much larger but neighboring town, I can see the worst case scenarios of our area being portrayed again and again (supposedly at a high rate, word on strerts) in this town. I think it also gives a voice to a lot of victims that we don't hear about often in the news, but their lives are lost every day.
These are the ratings I'd expect if someone told fans of Pen15 or Atlanta to watch the original movie. And no disrespect to Brad who is one of the greatest actors ever and in many exceptional movies, even the Mr &Mrs Smith movie wasn't that bad for what it was, just not something I'd watch a remake of. This was advertised so hard as a remake, which is a shame. Hopefully people who are familiar with the works of the two leads will know better and give it a chance. I like the anthology feel where there were different new characters played by multiple exceptional actors (Perlman, posey, even Michaela coel!!), some of which come back throughout. It was left a little open ended, maybe they'll come back for round 2!
Granted I could watch hours of Rosa Salazar riding in that car listening to Folk Implosion and Phil Collins, or Keener going around with gorgeous siamese manipulating people with bizarre conversations so perhaps a bit bias but...I found this refreshing and nostalgic for late 90s early 2000s cinema, like stranger things to the 80s. Enjoy the ride.
