I'm a latecomer to this series and I have to say I'm really enjoying lots about it, none more so than Billy Bob Thornton who is outstanding. In fact, most of the main characters are played really well and the script is well-written with a mix of darkness and humour. As many reviewers on here have already commented, the weaknesses thus far are the former wife and the daughter who are the worst 1970s stereotypes I've seen in a long time. It's like having Daisy Duke back; eye candy and not much else, adding nothing else to the story (so far, I must admit.) Sadly for me, accidentally reading a 'spoiler alert' review, I discovered that they don't get caught in a well blowout anytime soon. The storylines are interesting and the shots of Texas with the music add much more. Looking forward to catching up in all episodes. Would be a higher score if it wasn't for the bimbos.
I thoroughly enjoyed this representation of one of the most unusual but important 'military tribunals' in memory. We all know the general story and outcomes from the trials but this concentrated on the relationship between the ultimately tragic US Army psychiatrist, Major Dr Douglas Kelley, and one of the masterminds of the 'Final Solution.' Crowe produces one of his finest performances in years in playing Herman Göring, Hitler's No2. At times you can feel why Kelley seemed to almost fall for his charms and help him on occasion. On the other hand, I felt Rami Malek was completely miscast in this role of Kelley. His facial expressions (sometimes with his permanent smirk on display) completely undermined his acting. As one UK film critic wrote, the problem with him was he spent the whole film looking like Freddie Mercury. A mention too for young British actor Leo Woodall as Howie, assigned as Kelley's translator.
I think the guy who said this is like a made-for-tv Hallmark film hit the nail on the head. Not knowing any of the actors, I was surprised how mediocre the adult performers were. The two main teenage characters, however, were very good. The story? Once you know the main point of the film (it's actually in the blurb) you already can guess the ending. Another movie where I'm glad my annual cinema pass covered the entry but it wasn't too painful.
