A combination of Patrick Swayze's roadhouse, Robert Mitchum's thunder Road in an Elvis picture. A then unknown William Defoe, and an already established judge Reinhold as well as Kaaren Lee, Kate Vernon( Johns daughter), Alan Autry and Keyvn Major Howard make for a fun fast 90 minutes. Add rockabilly Artists including Tex Rubienetz and you've got memorable lightweight popcorn movie..Really liked this one.
Angelica Houston is marvelous as Calamity Jane as is Melanie Griffith as a real life Brothel owner...Sam Elliott plays Wild Bill Hickcock as a charming rogue. His characterization makes sense when you realize Hickok died a young man and probably didn't have a chance to grow old to maybe find out who he really was...
It's an interesting take on the character, but to me the revelatory performances,in this film are Jack Palance and Tracy Walter... I could watch them all day as old men who loved the West and its freedom. You can absolutely feel it when they start to yearn for the old days when Buffalo and Beaver were abundant. Somehow they make me yearn right along with them. Great great actors.
I laughed out loud this movie. Love the premise. It's something fun. I understand there's an infamous film on which this was based but this was done by talented people having a good time,. Good comedy in the vein of Rustler's Rhapsody by way of Peter O'Toole's, The Stuntman.
Quite a few laugh out loud moments with some poignancy. Tommy Lee Jones needs to make another western Robert De Niro Morgan Freeman, and the young lady playing the director are terrific. The premise is a little flimsy, but really who cares....it's a chance for some terrific performance performers to get together and entertain us for an evening much like Noises Off and My Favorite Year do. Make no mistake. Those are superior vehicles. Still, this is a lot of fun grab the popcorn. But one main negative to me is the language is too much for the premise, but I was willing to put up with it because I was enjoying the ride.
