I saw another review that hit upon a great point. This series starts off with a bang. It comes up with new ideas and characters and builds on various ideas and concepts.
And then... the change. Everything happens at the last second. Tension is built. Always. Whoever handled the middle seasons did not understand how to properly pace a show. They're always in danger. That escape? Just in time. That rescue? Just in time. Not every excursion has to be this way. Someone might die almost every episode. I was really drawn in and invested in some of the characters for a while, but then they're shuffled and used in ways they weren't meant to be.
As a friend noted, the show is called Discovery, and it seems like that's the last thing it's about. Almost every series I've watched for a bit has had solid well paced and thoughtful episodes. This just seems to be a bunch of people who want to see how much of the special effects budget they can spend.

I liked this movie the first time I saw it, and I liked it even more today. This is a fun bit of cartoonish silliness not too unlike the tone of The Pink Panther, especially the Steve Martin remake.
Johnny Depp plays the refined Mr Mortdecai who is used to a life of luxury and a loyal manservant. Like Peter Sellers' Cleuseau, achievements are a combination of skill and pure luck. All in all he remains likeable and somewhat innocent despite his various undertakings. Tasked with retrieving a painting, he hatches a plan to somehow come out on top. It's a fun romp, and I love Johnny Depp when he acts with his face. It's an under appreciated skill.

I think skin flicks, as they were known, were more predominant in the 70s and 80s. The movies existed primarily to show naked ladies. The more hardcore skin flicks would include sex scenes, and movies like this were more about how many nude scenes they could fit in.
The whole movie is silly and absurd in the best ways. It's got references pulled from TV of the time, like the reference to the trash bag, referencing the commercial line, "Don't get mad, get Glad". And "I'm a popper, you're a popper, he's a popper, she's a popper"... add to that a ships captain who often seems to be going for his best Humphrey Bogart impression, and you've got a bunch of silliness. For me, the appearance of Mary Jo Catlett was quite a surprise. She was already an established actor.
The movie itself is fluff, revolving around a big beach bash, and a lot of good looking 18 and ups. Other characters were most likely added for comic relief, and they do their job well. It emphasizes letting loose, partying, and just having fun and going with the flow. If you've got 90 minutes to kill and don't want to think, it's not a bad way to kill some time. There are a lot of movies that tried harder and did way worse than this one.
