The easiest way to describe the show is that Fred Silverman of NBC had a say in the production, and it was another formulaic action adventure program under his reign that lacked charisma.
A classic example of what went wrong with the show was that the protagonists had an AI system that would provide information by speaking as well presenting video. In one episode, the computer explains what will happen if the villains use a nuclear weapon by showing clips of nuclear explosion. Many people may turned the channel after that scene.

For 1972, the ending with the group ending up with the diamond was what made the film interesting. The story could be seen as a story of people going through great efforts to be politically correct, but the ending was that of a typical heist film. The film appears to have lost money in its box office results and might have been due to the perception of the film as mentioned above.
It was the 1972, family-friendly film that was ideal for screening in small town movie theaters. Not to emphasize the heist ending too much, the film was not really that memorable with the exception of the clever ending.
