Let me say from the outset, I was not a huge fan of Moulin Rouge or Australia, but I absolutely loved The Great Gatsby. I went in with pretty low expectations from reviews I ha seen. I was expecting something beautiful but shallow and maybe even slightly annoying. But while it was most definitely beautiful, it was also well crafted, brilliantly performed, and much more meaningful than I expected. I was taken on a journey that pulled me in from start to finish. I also must be one of the only people in the world who didn't read the book in school, so I had absolutely no idea what was going to happen - and I found the story very surprising. The casting of the characters was perfect in this regard. Loved it!
I just watched this on Bigpond movies not really expecting anything as I had never heard of it before, and it was thought provoking and touching. Not sure why such an average low rating on this site - although perhaps some people don't like some of the themes. Despite its dark nature at times, I found it surprisingly upbeat. Great cast too, especially the young lead who plays Steve. It also had a great soundtrack which helped set the tone of the film. It is a bit of a slow burner - I thought from the opening scenes it might be the usual Underbelly rip-off type Australian drama, but that's a bit of a trick as the film soon moves in a different direction. It's definitely a hard film to summarise - its quite a little story in some ways, but it really resonated.
