Main character is either catatonic or screaming at everyone, rushing into idiotic "don't go into the basement" situations to move the story along while doing everything to make himself look guilty for, well, anything you can think of. There's just too much reliance on suspension of disbelief to excuse moronic acts and decisions. At 31 minutes into episode 4 I stopped watching as I'd concluded the lead was a lemming being led to their own death by a pitiful plot. Shouting and confusion does not make drama and this show is a prime example why. It's drivel.
After twenty minutes I'd still no idea were this drivel was leading and no interest in finding out. At first I thought I'd was missing something so went back a couple of times to earlier scenes to see what that might be, but nothing jumped out at me. Some people talked, some people did things, but none of it had any intent or purpose other than to go through the motions. It was the movie equivalent of a slab of tofu served on a cardboard plate with a plastic cup of water.
Although the show has nostalgia, it doesn't make the mistake other ST shows have in milking it incessantly. This gives space for minor characters to be brought to the fore with evolved back stories and interesting arcs. It also allows new characters to be brought in without fragmenting the main storyline with too many to keep track of or them not being deep enough in development. Storylines from the original series are alluded to with evolution rather than repetition and built upon throughout all three series. While all this artistic flavour, drama and depth is crafted the show is at times self-deprecating, light hearted and fun, ensuring a full range of emotional perspectives for the viewer to enjoy. While at times there's drama, thrills and even horror, these are contrasted against romance, comedy and family often within the same episode. This show reminds me of TNG in its richness of story, protagonists, antagonists, lore and universe combined with the best of my favourite ST shows alluded to in the title of my review. I simply LOVE it!
