The Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show Starring Kendrick Lamar

The Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show Starring Kendrick Lamar

  • An introduction & homage to the foundation of hiphop

Opening up the halftime show with Samuel Jackson to play Uncle Sam himself to be the "voice of reason" or a "referee" if you will about how a rapper needs to perform on stage is absolutely genius. The reasons being the multiple elephants in the room during Kendrick Lamar's halftime show. What are those elephants? Let's start with the first one being the fact this is the first time a rapper has ever headlined a Super Bowl, once it was announced that it was the case you bet there was a lot of people complaining about it, let's just say, America has not been the most kindest to rap music. But can you blame America? It's a very new genre, we still hear the saying "rap isn't music" but with a genre of music being so young yet still making it so far touching the world in lengths that it has, who would be the right man for the job to pull this off? Thus leads to the 2nd elephant in the room, the whole "Lil Wayne should have been headlining debate" it since it's in his home town, it caused the hip hop discourse to debate endlessly, rap has been known to be competitive & has caused a huge debate around the NFLs decision, & lastly the 3rd elephant, Kendrick's MASSIVE beef with Drake, where he pretty much ended that with the hit song "not like us" a song that claimed Drake & his peers to be pedophiles, the song was brought to court & caused audiences to believe he may not play the song in concert due to the contents & it being on such a massive stage.

There was so much going on with this Super Bowl, and needless to say, I believe this Kendrick Halftime Show pulled off a fantastic execution in expert comedic satire stage play & performance. This show began with Kendrick Lamar rapping clearly, viscerally & crouching over the hood of a Buick GNX 1987 the year hiphop was molding to change, the year he was born, the year that changed hip hop, red white and blue figures rushed the stage outside of the GNX and my eyes locked into the show from here on. Kendrick Lamar played songs contrasting to Americas Uncle Sam Jackson and his hilarious use of undermining the hiphop culture, it's all beautiful to look at, listen to & watch, the colors & idea of Kendrick carrying the show on enlivened the mood. But then it reaches my favorite part of the entire show, when all the music is off & he is standing on the block around people at a light pole & just rapping while the men dressed in white are beat boxing, THAT is TRUE HIP HOP culture at its purest form & is a complete homage to the visceral feel. Then we transition to a surprise Guest SZA, her & Mr Lamar offer a terrific Pallet cleanser during the show, hilariously we cut back to the Boy Scout Jackson who says "see? This is what America wants" he's not lying, but then the show ends in a landslide, how Kendrick is able to handle the 3rd elephant in the room I mentioned in my prior paragraph is done in such a creative way, he throws a red herring at the audience & doubles back on what we REALLY want to see. And needless to say, it is truly remarkable!

All in all, look, it's not the GREATEST halftime show ever, however, it is the most ambitious halftime show ever, by far, there is a lot of compelling symbolism & the story it's trying to tell is by far the most effective I've ever seen done for a Super Bowl halftime show. Usually an artist just goes up there & performs their hits & keeps it moving. Kendrick wanted to perform a message, and that message dates back to the origins of hip hop, the essence of the soul & the spirit of the sport... it is a game after all, and it is a game that is now over.

    Great work MR. LAMAR!

  • A boring game with EPIC entertainment making up for it

This Super Bowl the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs, and along with it Kendrick Lamar headlining the Super Bowl along with a lot of surprises. Fun commercials & entertaining performances. I noticed they introduced a "pre halftime show" this time around for this Super Bowl with Lady Gaga playing the piano which I thought was excellent!

We then have a tremendous marching band leave a massive mark in the foundation of such an epic introduction to this face off, leading up to what we are here for. The game!

Now, the first half of the game had the eagles dominating but it was still too close to call & it was still fairly entertaining. But it all goes downhill from there after halftime, you would have thought the chiefs would have had some sort of fight in them but the eagles completely dominated them to the point that the chiefs looked like a college team.

Now the game may have been bad but what makes up for it? Kendrick Lamar's halftime Super Bowl show. His performance was a spectacle marvel feasting upon the eyes, using Sam Jackson to play Uncle Sam to be the voice of reason if you will, since the 2 obvious elephant in the room is that America hasn't been so kind to hip hop music "rap isn't music" is a saying of dinosaur talk. Kendrick Lamar expertly used a form of comedic satire to communicate with the audience that hiphop is a movement & his message resonated so much more than anything else in this Super Bowl, his performance alone I would rate a solid 8/10 it makes up for this Super Bowl. Then there's the 2nd obvious elephant in the room, the whole Drake/Kendrick beef that happened, with Kendrick brutally claiming Drake to be a pedophile with the hit song "not like us" causing many viewers on the fence wondering if he could even perform such a song over the content on such an occasion, rest assured without spoiling it, how he handles this situation is BEYOND expert leveled execution, because it's the 1 song we are all sitting on edge wondering if it will happen, how he handles introducing this song was creative & played with the audience. His performance had a conveying base storyline that wasn't afraid to be humorous & real, and my personal favorite part of his performance was when all the music turns off and he takes hip hop back to its roots, just rapping while the members behind him produce beats using their mouths! ITS BEAUTIFUL & homage to the culture of where hiphop came from. I'm focusing a lot on this halftime show but I have to, it's the massive magnifying glass that I think stood out the most for this Super Bowl! Kendrick Lamar did a phenomenal job!

So all in all, it's a great halftime show, solid commercials, a disappointing game, but when it's all wrapped up, it was entertaining, & at least the Eagles took the win, I wanted them to win anyways but I always value a great game.

  • I really hate how they write Lois Lane

This is probably the most over the top & annoying episode I've seen so far in this show, regarding Lois Lane, granted I think she's great but there's a hand full of writing decisions that rather than coming off as funny & quirky just feel off. She's a literal child with the spiraling she does in this episode. In season 1 the witness episode was another one I took issue with but her points made some sort of sense, here they make her just jealous over an award, and to extreme measures becomes something that is the opposite of the embodiment of Lois Lane, this episode just felt like a spoof of the character of Superman & Lois rather than building it more, they play with the idea of them together yet take 2 steps back.

I'll give it a 7 because of the things around this show make up for a solid episode, Superman, Clark, and the whole action stuff was fine, but this is my first review of this show with this specific episode because my issue with Lois Lane. For the 90's I guess this wasn't such a big deal but watching it now it doesn't hold up & felt off.
