I am sad I'm writing such a negative review for this. This movie started strong, and by the time I was at the "Snack Shack" title, I was enthusiastic. My enthusiasm stayed pretty much until the hotdogs bit, then I paused the movie and seen I was only half way through and I felt deflated. Pausing it had made me realise how silly the story had been so far, and that I had a full hour left of this disjointed "plot". It was all a bit messy, and I was bored and I didn't really care what happened at the end, so I quit. I don't really feel like picking apart what exactly was wrong, so I won't. I will say that for all the sets and costumes were good, there wasn't a realism. This wasn't a true story. I doubt it was even a collection of little bits of true stories. It was a 50+ year old white man looking back at 90s white suburbia and writing some sort of pseudo-reality where capitalism was his invisible friend, and his friend's girlfriend wanted him instead.
I have been buzzing for this for 6 months, and I hoped it wouldn't be another case of having my hopes dashed. It wasn't. This was really really good. I watched it in one go, 4 hour binge, and at points I did wonder if I could watch it serialised. But that maybe says more about binge culture than it does the show. There were some good twists and turns, a tense atmosphere and well developed characters. Loved this, I want more already. There was more existential naval gazing than I'd usually put up with, butI enjoyed this more than I usually would. I enjoyed the Japanese setting, and the artwork felt rich to me.
There's really something here, something very special, charming and endlessly hilarious. Another reviewer (in their 1 star review) pointed out that there is a Ren and Stimpy element about the animation, and I was like "yes, that's it, that's the ingredient ". The pacing of the shorts, which are usually under 5 minutes long, really improves the humour, jokes and slapstick happenings come thick and fast. Goofy is sometimes a bit gross, which I like because a clean Goofy never did make sense to me, and Donald Duck is his usual grumpy self. A lot of fun. When am I going to hit this reviews character minimum limit, sheesh!
