Eiriksterminator

This ended up being a disappointment. I like the original Kill Boksoon movie; it had a decent story, and good action. But this spinoff is a letdown, and does not live up to the previous movie. The plot is rather weak, and although there are a few half-decent but ultimately underwhelming fights, there is still far too little action spread across the almost 2 hour runtime. Unlike the previous movie, this one focuses a lot on the romance aspect of the two lead actors, and their so-called "complicated" relationship. Now I can enjoy both good action movies and good romance movies, but blending the two rarely works too well imo, and this one is no exception. It ends up being pretty boring overall, with both the action and the romance being kind of weak. If there's ever a third movie sequel or spinoff, I hope they get back to focusing on the action more, like in the first film. But to be honest at this point I really don't think I want or need more from this particular assassin movie universe. There have been plenty of other much better Korean assassin action movies, including many more recent ones, and many of them on Netflix as well. This one specifically, however, was definitely a letdown.

I don't understand all the complaints about the movie not being original/different enough from other movies, almost everything you can think of has already been done in movies at this point, so that's pretty hard to avoid. Something good doesn't become bad just because there's something else good doing the same thing. That kind of thinking has never made sense to me.

Likewise, I also don't understand the complaints about the movie blending and mixing several different genres, as if that's a bad thing. It's not. It's an awesome thing. What's the problem with a movie being a comedy, drama, and action movie all at once? Why does it have to be only one genre? Such a weird take imo.

This had action and thrilling car chases, comedy and funny scenes, and a few very emotional scenes with some really great acting, especially from Samara Weawing (others have pointed this out already, but I feel the need to chime in: this lady can act. Hollywood needs to give her better and bigger roles already). What's not to love?

It's no masterpiece, but it's for sure an entertaining one time watch on a late evening. Don't listen to the naysayers claiming otherwise. One potential problem may be the ending. Without spoiling, it makes sense from a character growth perspective, but it doesn't give a good payoff after all the emtional stuff that's happened. Some may like it, some may not. Your mileage will also wary depending on how well you can tolerate the character of Edie's boyfriend John.

The movie is decent up until the last 30 minutes, but then it all falls apart with several unrealistic developments, and an unsatisfying non-ending. It also lacks the subtle comedy of the Korean original from 2014. There was a Chinese remake in 2017 as well. I watched the original Korean movie and the Chinese remake back to back a few years ago, and now I've seen this Japanese remake as well. Honestly...I really hope this is the last remake, because in the end, the Korean original still remains superior in pretty much every way. So my advice is still to just go and watch that. It has a much better ending as well.
