  • Unrealised potential!

"Under the Shadow" is an audacious amalgam of symbolic and psychological horror that, while effectively establishing its foundation ultimately falls short in fully realising its inherent ideas and their respective potentials.

Quite disheartening, because Babak Anvari as the writer-director, demonstrates a clear proficiency and understanding of the craft. With a bit more depth in the write-up, the narrative and its implications could have had a superior stage to convey its messaging.

  • Thoughtful exploration of love identity and existentialism, but...

I would like to begin by expressing my appreciation for the cinematographic work and the thoughtful selection of locations.

They significantly enhance the visual artistry, not only evoking a profound sense of melancholy but also revealing underlying dourness that permeates the narrative.

The dialogues, rich with philosophical implications pertaining to one's identity sexuality, and the moral complexities of forbidden attractions, are definitely commendable.

However, though I admire the creative vision, I find the theatrical presentation somewhat limiting.

This approach tends to overshadow and undermine the intricate essence of the script which detracted me from the fruitful experience I was hoping, as I felt a lack of emotional and dramatic resolution, which diluted my overall experience.

  • The ending left a sour taste!

Witnessing stories like this always evokes a deep sense of empathy and concern for the future that lies ahead for me and my partner.

The prospect of transitioning from our daily routines to a life governed by stringent medical oversight in our last years in itself is daunting and the mere thought of facing unforeseen illnesses or unexpected tragedies without any of our loved ones nearby is even scarier.

I extend my heartfelt admiration to all those elderly couples who, despite confronting significant challenges, remain steadfast in their commitment to each other's safety and well-being.

Their willingness to be each other's unwavering support embodies the profound love that many of us yearn for but few are fortunate enough to behold.

The opportunity to have a beloved companion by your side, unconditionally, amidst trying times is a true blessing. If you find yourself surrounded by the love and warmth of those dear to you in your moments of need, consider yourself incredibly lucky.

Haneke, as the director, poignantly illustrates this very sentiment through the narrative of Georges and Anne, albeit with his characteristic bleak and nihilistic conclusion that leaves a sour aftertaste.
