Anyone who appreciates Lawrence's novel will be naturally dubious that any film could successfully capture the beauty and the subtlety of the book. This film comes closer than I thought possible.
The casting of Jack O'Connell as Mellors was a masterstroke and he embodies the many facets of the gamekeeper/lover with passion and authenticity. Although Emma Corrin was perhaps a less canny choice, it is hard to find anything to fault about her performance as the titular noblewoman.
The burden of film adaptations is to telescope the narrative of the novel to a manageable length, often resulting in a fatal butchering of the author's work. This difficult task is accomplished here with unusual finesse,
Anyone who dismisses this very fine film as a Mills and Boone style romance is tone deaf and probably as shallow as those who dismissed Lawrence's novel as pornographic. Both assertions are without merit.
If the viewer enjoys the film, he is also invited to read Lawrence's original text for added delight. It is a classic for the ages, ably served by this cinematic interpretation.
