Oh my goodness, what the heck happened? This movie got off to a decent start. I totally got what the message was and the purpose of "The Substance". I found the premise interesting and engaging. This was, in my opinion, an original approach to the subject of beauty; how we see ourselves, how others see us, and how they rarely match. Then throw into it the presumed expectations of those in the public eye. The view of the movie and the ladies was inviting and entertaining and they got you to dislike the main male character almost right out of the gate. The cinematography, most of the acting, and the make-up/special effects is why I gave 5 stars. But beware the last 40 minutes will have you scratching your head and wondering what the heck just happened. Personally I do not think this movie deserved all the hype. So let's ask my question, would I watch this again and I can say without a doubt, no way!! What this at your own risk, be prepared to go from a decent movie to something else. On to the next.
I'm so confused from all the high ratings on this movie. It was by far probably one of the weirdest movies I've ever watched, yes I actually watched the whole thing. There was nothing scary, thrilling, or funny about this movie. I will say for what it was it was well acted even by the children but that's probably the most positive thing I can say. There was no clear understanding of anything that happened or even why it happened. Nothing was really resolved and you are left scratching your head. In this instance unless totally weird, unexplainable, off the wall is your thing I honestly do not recommend this movie, unless maybe you're bored and looking for something to take up your time. I gave 5 stars for the acting and cinematography. The answer to my question, no I can promise you I will not be watching this movie again. On to the next.
Not sure why so many bad reviews. Now I will admit I didn't realize it's a video game, these adaptations can be hit or miss. Maybe not knowing anything about the game is why I found it entertaining. I like that it wasn't over the top corny and it really wasn't that predictable. I felt like the acting matched the theme of the movie. I recommend don't go in to watching this expecting a recreation of a video game, just watch it as a movie. To answer the question I always ask myself, would I watch this again, most likely. On to the next.
