This is a best of list limited to 150 horror movies for true horror fans. I've seen over 1000 horror movies and this list contains my favourites. The list is ordered in order of my personal taste without crediting movies for their influence on the horror scene. Recommended sequels are added in the comments. 

The criterium for getting on this list is that I have to want to see them again and want to buy them on DVD/Blu-ray. Commercial horror like "Interview with a vampire" or "World War Z" are excluded.

Among my favourite directers one will find Sam Raimi, Lucio Fulci, Rob Zombie, James Wan, Jean Rollin, Brian Yuzna, George a Romero, Lucky Mckee, Dario Argento, Mario Bava, Roger Corman, Pete Walker, Scott Derrickson, Freddie Francis, Terence Fisher and Jesus Franco. I hope my list will help horror fans finding new titles of great horror!

The 80s were a great decade for horror. This list contains all horror movies I've seen from 1980 to 1989 in order of my personal taste. Only movies which are considered horror following IMDB are put on this list, so movies like 'The Hitcher', 'Aliens' or 'They Live!' fall out of the selection.

The 75 highest rated movies are great and are worth watching multiple times. Most of the lower rated movies are actually still fun to watch. Horror-related movies are lower on the list. Most of these are good, but in my opinion less fun.

Universal studios dominated the world of horror in the classic period with movies like 'Frankenstein', 'Dracula', 'The Mummy', 'The Invisible Man', 'The Wolf Man' and 'The Creature from the Black Lagoon'. 

This list contains all Universal horror and monster movies from the 20s to the 60s I have seen, including many less known sci-fi horror and murder mysteries like the Inner Sanctum movies featuring Lon Chaney Jr.

Best to worst classic universal monster / horror movies (1923-1960)

Jesus Franco was a very productive director of (s)exploitation movies. The movies are usually rated low because of explicit erotic/ tasteless scenes. Because we fans like these movies  I offer a guide line for (beginning) Franco lovers. I prefer his horror movies and cinematic masterpieces.

Some movies seem to be impossible to add to a list: "The Portrait of Doriana Gray" aka "Die Marquise von Sade"/"Das Bildnis der Doriana Gray" should have been on number 17, "Nightmares come at Night" on number 20, "Mädchen im Nachtverkehr/ Girls in Night Traffic" on number 27, "The Sexual Story of O" on number 43 and "Female Vampire" on number 36.
