  • Nice Night In The Down Under

Always have been a fan of Australian horror since way back with Razorback. Be it Wolf Creek, The Loved Ones, Black Water, Talk To Me, Killing Ground, the two Wyrmwood films (both Glorious goodness), and the awesome BAIT. Australia can really pull out some good horror on a regular basis. This was a pretty entertaining one, great practical effects, good acting and an intriguing story, though not well enough explained. So it does have its flaws. But it was also very engaging.

The effects were pretty nice and it falls quite comfortably in to the body horror category, as well as the demonic possession creature feature ones as well. Got this from the Aussie boutique Umbrella which is where those of us in states have to get some nice physical media from as Europe and Australia don't allow streaming services to be so predatory like they are in the States, which equal many films not getting physical releases (Have to keep those perpetual rental subs in line. Very glad to have this on bluray and n my collection. A fun time and worth it.

  • Nostalgia Genre Goodness

What can be said aside from having some wonderful tropes. It pretty much checked most of the boxes and had some great aesthetics. From the clothes and hairstyles, to the bevy of "pretty people peril" of both genders. They were fair with the nudity even, something even horror films of today can seem to manage (meaning equal nudity as opposed to just stripping females and never showing any dudes for fear str8 guys will have some kind of fit (What's up with that anyway).

Though some complain about the "Same ole same ole", that very same ole same ole is what most real horror fans expect and appreciate. I've never minded a clone as long the acting, cast and story were watchable, It's a horror film, not Citizen Kane. The "typical" tropes and story is what makes a genre film a genre film. If you want to just go watch Halloween or Scream over and over then go do that. But most fans, and especially film collectors, want a lot more of the same, so to speak, as long as it has its own identity then I'm always glad to add "yet another slasher" into my horror film collection. Very glad Severin sis a remaster release for us to get it into our collections.

Fun film, fun time, like any slasher should be. .

  • Beyond The Wasteland

M aka Beyond The Wasteland (It's title for it's north American and northern European Blu-ray release), Is a magnificent alt-zombie film told almost entirely from the perspective of a 9-ish year old child. From the swathing first act, he and his father alone, hidden deep in the forest from the now ravaged world outside. To his amazing journey, in child like perspectives out and across the land in search of his fairytale goal of finding company, safety and peace.

The cinematography was just amazing, from the forest to the ravaged concrete city as his journey progresses. Don't fear the mistaken thought that there is no action, Zeds or frights for there surely are. Jumps and tears await in equally measure in this tale. I was pretty amazed at how intently I became engrossed in this film and its story progression. Some scenes caused me much distress as well and unexpected heartbreak.

The final act, so dismal and dark as you tried with all hope to hold onto the promise of a happy ending for Marco. Was rewarded in spades. I kind of had that sixth sense, being the collector I am and seemingly expert after all the years of just "knowing" that I am going to like this...a sense that held true. I am so glad to have this film on blu-ray for the Zombie/Virus/Contagion section of my film collection. And my score reflects my adoration for this film. It' is certainly worth picking for any collector out there. 8.4/10.
