This actually felt like a Grand Finale. "Downton Abbey" was there for me for many years, this family became my family and they became my friends. It will always hold a special place in my heart because I love it so much. It always brought me joy and even if it shredded my heart to pieces many many times, it still is one great show. This last movie pays a homage and tribute to the earlier episodes and to Dame Maggie Smith. We get to see all our favourite characters again and they get to wrap their lives up. We do imagine what the future holds but Fellowes decided to close the curtain right when the inevitable would have happened. I was a crying mess by the end of it, I wouldn't have complained at all even if we got to see many more of these movies coming out. I just miss my posh English family so much.
An aesthetically pleasing slasher movie. Something about 80s porn, and 70s slasher movies makes the perfect combination for a good horror movie. The way this gave me the creeps is unbelievable. There's something much more deep in here, where the central core of the movie seems to be beauty and life expectations, and big dreams. With youth all possibilities seem endless, with age, it just seems that some things will never happen. What can one do after? All possibilities are lost. It's a good horror movie, combined with an essence of something more elevated, and I honestly am very intrigued to follow the rest of the story.
A powerhouse performance both by Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. The movie's central theme is about long marriage and the dynamic of it. Where do people stand within it, what are their roles, what is their main purpose, how easy is it to lose oneself or to sacrifice one's dream in it. It's a universal theme, this time discussed in the vitriolic style of the British, but within an American background. The movie is pretty funny at times and has some really laugh-at-loud moments. Colman's deliveries are all hilarious, she's really a joy to look at. There's a weak second act, but when we reach the third act, through the madness of it all, is how we find the emotional pull of the movie. "The Roses" is a really fun time at the movies, but it feels like a theme that's been discussed a lot. Either than the amazing magic of the protagonists, it brings nothing new at the table.
