  • X makes you want more

An aesthetically pleasing slasher movie. Something about 80s porn, and 70s slasher movies makes the perfect combination for a good horror movie. The way this gave me the creeps is unbelievable. There's something much more deep in here, where the central core of the movie seems to be beauty and life expectations, and big dreams. With youth all possibilities seem endless, with age, it just seems that some things will never happen. What can one do after? All possibilities are lost. It's a good horror movie, combined with an essence of something more elevated, and I honestly am very intrigued to follow the rest of the story.

  • A fun time at the movies, the Roses brings nothing new at the table

A powerhouse performance both by Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. The movie's central theme is about long marriage and the dynamic of it. Where do people stand within it, what are their roles, what is their main purpose, how easy is it to lose oneself or to sacrifice one's dream in it. It's a universal theme, this time discussed in the vitriolic style of the British, but within an American background. The movie is pretty funny at times and has some really laugh-at-loud moments. Colman's deliveries are all hilarious, she's really a joy to look at. There's a weak second act, but when we reach the third act, through the madness of it all, is how we find the emotional pull of the movie. "The Roses" is a really fun time at the movies, but it feels like a theme that's been discussed a lot. Either than the amazing magic of the protagonists, it brings nothing new at the table.

  • Celine Song really knows her craft

It turns out Celine Song's movies simply talk to me. It's almost like they're written for me, I feel like they come out when I find myself contemplating about life's probabilities. "Materialists" is a study about the modern man, how he has become a person that heavily sells himself at the "market" showcasing only his best qualities and fake pictures, without sharing any of his flaws, so that he'll find a good match. A match can mean many things, according to each person anything could be something that a person needs you to have as a perfect quality for the match to happen. The movie studies what makes people marry, what leads them to that decision. It heavily relies on modern ideas and it views everything from a modern lense, what are the reasons a couple decides to get married. Dakota Johnson is actually great as the protagonist, she embodies the current situation. And then we have two potential lovers, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans. Pedro Pascal represents the ideal groom, the ideal husband, the ideal match. Chris Evans, in a wonderful performance, brings the flavour in the plot, as he is the actual original lover. He represents real love and raw emotion. This movie is written perfectly and although I would have loved it to end differently, the ending just fits with Song's interpretation of love perfectly. I'm really glad movies like this exist, because only with everyday themes like this has cinema a purpose. A beautiful story, I just need her to make more!
