"Zootopia" was an absolutely crazy movie with an absolutely smart concept. It is a comment on the current environment, how people perceive each other, how people view each other and how people interact with each other. It's a very political movie, with a very clear message, being made simple by animation. Other than that it was an absolutely fun mystery ride. "Zootopia 2" is an extremely political movie! I really don't know if they realised it when making it, but this movie at its core has a very political message. It feels like the current political environment affected the creators, I'd be surprised if it didn't. "Zootopia 2" touches on more mature themes and it showcases them respectfully. It's a much more mature tale than the first movie. Judy and Nick are the perfect duo, their chemistry is everything. This is a really good story with a great plot and some great exploration of partner dynamics. A very mature work. This feels like Disney done right! They used to serve as a platform to showcase important themes, but they've recently turned into cash grabbing oligarchs. "Zootopia" feels like a brand that need to keep exploring new territories, because life is giving many more themes to be discussed. A movie about animals seems to capture the human experience perfectly.
This is undoubtedly entirely Jen's movie. Jennifer Lawrence has this rare talent where you watch her perform and it feels like she is not pretending. There's depth and real emotion in her face, in her eyes. There's this powerful aura around her. She's one of a kind. And she does play unhinged characters really well. "Die My Love" is a surreal movie about a woman who just gave birth. Everything in her life has to change focus, everything in her every day life has to shift. I never watched it as a literal story, everything that was portrayed on screen has a different meaning, a different reading, a more poetic or lyrical meaning. It's a story about a woman who feels like everything in her life is now changed that she's become a mother, and every societal expectation is suffocating her. Jennifer Lawrence gives a rare, raw and absolutely unique performance, and she has to be celebrated about it. If we're talking about talent, she has it all. Robert Pattinson feels like the best choice for her husband, he feels like a good co-pilot but this is undoubtedly her show. I came for her, I was hooked because of her. "Die My Love" is not an easy watch, and it's not made for everyone, because it is mostly a movie about people who can relate with motherhood. But god has she a way of pulling you in. I really am glad we get to experience Jen's acting in this timeline!
There's this current trend on the internets these days where there's a person that misses the person they went to the first movie with, and I felt it to my core.
"For Good" is actually Act II after the curtain call. I think it is instantly apparent that this was an absolute disaster of a choice to split this story in two parts. The main theme of the entire story is lost between the one year gap. Everything happening feels like a filler scene. There's no real connection between the themes of the first movie and this. This had to be a complete story in one single movie. The thing is, the emotional pull is there but all these jumps in-between and all the extra scenes that have no actual reason to exist weaken the emotions. "For Good" was always meant to be the weakest of the two parts as the songs in this are really weak as well. All the thrill of Act I is somewhat toned down, there are not many songs that stand out, vwith "For Good" caring the entirety of Act II by being the emotional center of the entire show. It was the strongest scene in the entire movie. And it destroyed me. Very emotional, very beautiful very powerful scene. Erivo and Grande actually are amazing together, they made these movies huge. It's all on them. Musicals require people who know how to sing. "Wicked" is saved by its performers. The visuals and set pieces are stunning and beautiful, the new songs add nothing to the plot and the runtime is ridiculous. This could have been an hour shorter. As a standalone "For Good" doesn't work at all. As a sequel it feels like it's dragging a lot. As an Act II it's perfect, if you combine it with the first movie. Grande and Erivo are the best thing that has come of this. Wicked the musical feels like a more cohesive story. But these movies are actual, real fun!
I'm a complete, total mess but for reasons of my own.
