James Gunn takes a crack at Superman and gets mixed results in the process. Corenswet is actually a good pick for the caped hero. He's no Henry Cavill, but he's a solid pick. The problem with this movie isn't the characters. Heck, Nathan Fillion is an amazing and hilarious Green Lantern. Hoult is a fantastic Lex Luthor. I like the casting choices.
The problem with the movie is the lack of character building, subpar writing and poor world building. It feels like things just move at a rapid pace and it's not the most cohesive or easy to keep up with. Some of the scenes feel too long and too over the top. To get back to the casting, as much as I like it, we still get background characters that feel so pointless. Like Hoover as Cat Grant. Really? She's just eye candy that wears a revealing outfit. It's kind of ridiculous and silly.
We can compare this all day to films like Man of Steel or Batman vs Superman. All of these films have their pros and cons. They're all good and bad in their own ways. Is Eisenberg that much worse than Hoult as Luthor? Maybe. Is Cavill that much better as Superman? Sure. But the bottom line is that as a movie, this just isn't on par with Man of Steel. I don't even know if it's better than Batman vs Superman, to be honest. There are some amazing moments in that film, despite all of its flaws
This iteration of Superman is perfectly fine. It doesn't break new ground. We've seen the story before. We know the dynamics between Clark and Lois. This is a more modern take on the story. Things may look a little different, but it's really the same. I like the funny moments and more lighthearted moments. I like Superman as a character. I like the villain. But none of this can fully make up for the lackluster script and lack of big moments that we have grown accustomed to in truly great superhero films.

I'm literally in shock at just how bad this movie is. It plays out like a giant Amazon ad constructed by a high school student. It looks like it has the budget of a kid's meal at your local burger joint. How can it be this bad? Lord have mercy on all that watch it.
What was Ice Cube thinking? Eva Longoria? The guy from Agents of Shield? Oh my. Must have been a good paycheck for them. It's embarrassing for all involved so I'm surprised they even signed on. The performances are actually awful and don't even match what's happening on-screen. Their reactions are phoned in. It's comical and mind-boggling.
Speaking of on-screen, that's what this movie is. It's all on a computer screen. Remember the excellent movie Searching? Yeah, it's that, but 100x worse and executed poorly. That movie was actually entertaining and engaging. Not this atrocity.
Why is this thing even using the War of the Worlds name? It feels like that aspect of the film was shoehorned in. It's all so random. The special effects of the action and "aliens" is shockingly bad. It looks like a student project. I can't even believe this movie exists. How was it green-lit? Who thought this was okay? It's barely watchable. Oh my goodness. Worst major movie release of the last decade, without question.

I watched this movie for the first time in 2025 and I'm so glad I finally did. The comedy style seems ahead of its time with constant funny goofs and moments. It's the type of comedy that many movies of the last 20 years or so have taken notes from, like The Other Guys, for example.
Leslie Nielsen is the perfect fit for the lead role. He delivers everything just as it should be delivered. The physical comedy is just as good as the rest. It's slapstick and stupid but it all works well somehow. The writing is better than you'd think, too.
I've come to the conclusion that this is one of the best comedies of the 80's. There was never a dull moment and I laughed most of the time. I'm excited to watch the rest of the series and see just how funny they can get.
