  • Drop everything and watch it now!

    Drop everything and watch it.

Watch this brilliance today, in the unlikely event you have not seen this soul stirring minseries of a gem already.

'Adolescence' is not a whodunnit, not a psychological drama, not a family drama, not an eye opening portrait depicting the dark sides of social media, not a deafening alarm to complacent parents. It is all this and more.

Volumes have been said praising the makers and the actors in extreme details. Be it cinematography, the dialogue, the commitment and the effort of everyone associated with the Netfix-can-be-proud-of release, you have to remind yourself often you are watching only a play of pixels on your TV and that Jamie and his family are not real.

Each of the four episodes is sheer poetry. The first shocks you and defines what the story is all about, the second reinforces the shock with Agatha Christieish twists, but the third and fourth are the life of the miniseries. And deservingly the most talked about.

In case you have not watched it yet, do that now and then come back for the second half of my review. Second half is a spoiler though not in the conventional sense of "warning:contains spoilers".

Well, you have resonated with 'Adolescence', so had audiences world over. May be you have given a repeat look at couple of its episodes. It is now the time to ponder over. Why the 3 to 4 hours of your TV time made a profound impression on your psyche, and in what direction the train of thought is progressing, post the watch? You are a parent, grandparent, parent-to-be, or a teenager. What is your reaction?

What made us relate so much to the characters, despite knowing they are fictional? Are we flabbergasted realising the impact of the social media on the generation? No. The impact is a reality whether we know it, or half- know it. Social media is what it is today because of us, because of the contribution of each one of us. Do we feel guilty we could not turn out to be 'good parents' inspite of volumes of parenting techniques we gobbled up from google and AI apps? Or, conveniently we throw the blame on the childhood trauma we underwent due to the bad parenting we received ourselves?

What is wrong with today's society and what can we do to set it right?

Some say answer lies in setting up and adhering to good value system. If your values and ethics are right, your family and as a consequence the society you live in tend to be positive no matter howmuch negative your past has been. Is it that simple? Is value system a panacea to the ills of today? For that matter, can a value system be defined in a yes-no formula in a ticklist format?

The gift of the miniseries to all of us is, whether the makers have thus intended or not, to instigate our rational and spiritual thinking a kickstart.

  • Emotioally appealing saga

In these days of plethora of mediocre shows and movies poured on you all round the OTT space, and you browse through nonchalantly alloting not more than 10 minutes per flick, Lucca was a pleasant surprise. You connect with the true-to-life characters. However much the narration may have been manipulated to fit into movie format, it is based on a true story.

Actors did well, especially the lead. Director deserves a pat for portraying the character of Lucca so realistic.

The voiceover was outright bad prompting me to bring down the rating. Dialogues too were no match to the powerful story.

I am not sure about the medical authenticity and relevance of the highlighted treatment. But the redtape, the foulness, and the greed prevalent in the medical world incapacitating the good work of few individuals is more than true.

  • Visual feast

Each frame a spectacle. Wow, the lighting, colour combination, the framing with a Kurosawaish balance, obviously accentuated by rich costmes, and jewellery. Something we are not treated by any director yet.

I resisted the urge to use the pause button umpteen times to squeeze more of the artistic pleasure. So much so, I missed the narrative.

On hindsight, Heeramandi is a hotchpotch of characters, not a single one well defined, not a single one you can relate to. Ofcourse, HM is anything but history with no Lahore in it.

Cartwright's character is horribly unrealistic. SLB's niece can't act, nor is she a looker. Only Manisha delivers

Music and dialogue match the splendor.
