The Silence

The Silence

  • What could have been...

Wow, The Silence started with such tremendous potential. The casting from Stanley Tucci to Kiernan Shipka was great with everyone delivering solid performances....will admit that the only characters that slightly irked me were The Reverend (given lack of dialogue I don't know what it was) Rob (again, early in his career and limited screen time but something was off).

The concept was great, and if not for A Quite Place (albeit released later) it would have been unique had I not watched them in reverse order. That being said, I enjoyed the slow build up, the character development as well as the premise.

As for the Direction, despite lacking refinement was ok, there were a few plot holes that could have been easily avoided but the film was pleasant enough to sit through and watch.

The introduction of the Reverend seems to have been where then story took a completely wrong turn and changed pace without delivering a fulfilling climax. This gave me the impression that The Silence may have originally been written as a TV Series that was later adapted by simply condensing multiple episodes.

I'd say the first 60min was great (episode 1 haha) but then quickly fell off the cliff and crash landed. In too many occasions you're left perplexed with the decisions of the family, in particular once the "new threat" to safety has been revealed.

All I'll say, and this is not a spoiler, the entire world's plight could have ended if they just used more wood chippers.....

  • Missed the landing

Honestly, my expectations when first starting to watch CAM were relatively low. That being said, there was enough about the story to keep me engaged and curious throughout. The casting and acting performances worked well while the Directing was equally solid.

The primary let down was the ending which never really addressed all the story lines and ultimate culprit/s. It left me wondering whether there were scenes removed during the edit or cut early on for budget reasons.

Given that this was released prior to the AI explosion, I wonder how this would be adapted today, especially if potentially increased the "horror" and "thriller" component or if targeting a higher age rating.

Worth watching if looking for something somewhat mindless background TV.

  • Tough......to watch

I had an internal battle whether to give this a harsh 5 or generous 6.... I eventually went for a 5 as I ultimately never felt satisfaction from watching the film.

On the positives, Dev Patel showcases that he should be considered for a broader range of roles and can deliver in both action and drama when the script allows for it. As his directorial deput, the film was certainly not flawless, seen by a number of vanity shots that failed to serve or move the story, that being said he clearly has the capacity to develop into a quality director when armed with stronger scripts and perhaps DOP.

On the negatives, the motivation for the Protagonist, despite being glaringly obvious and stereotypical, arrives far too late in the film and you fail to build any sense of sympathy or connection towards the character. The constant references to John Wick became irritating and only served to reinforce the poor efforts taken to clone a successful franchise. The cinematography and musical score lacked cohesion and consistency, something you can forgive and forget if the story grips you, alas it did not and shortcomings such as this merely became more noticeable.

Overall, I was hoping and expected more than the action filmed that was delivered. The hope was to see something more thought provoking or character driven compared to the John Wick clone which was delivered.

You can forgive a lot with action films, but this fell flat with a script that seemed written as if it was done in the 1980's (the completely unnecessary training montage being a prime example) and the number of scenes that failed to add value to the story....what little story there was (could have easily removed 15-20min).

It's not unwatchable nor one I would recommend, but certainly no rewatch value.
