I'm sorry but this was a huge dissapointment. The plot is supposed to be this philosophical exploration of the meaning of life, which in my book sounds amazing, yet in the end the whole thing feels cold and uninteresting.
A few things contribute to that, but most of all the direction.
The camera moves with these cartoonish moovements, and then always stops at some weird angle, coupled with the fact that he's using wide angle lens, and you feel like you're a disinterested fly moving through the film's world.
All of the actors are renowned and as capable as any, yet the movie feels like, you're watching a rehersal of the script, it seems as if they shot the movie in a week or something.
The sci-fi elements are kindergarten level at best, meaning - all the boring cliches like - pressing a lot of buttons on some weird controllers, work being represented as a video game, infantile design and terminology... And the philosiphical topics are as cliche as the former.
I like some of Terry's movies, but this one honestly feels like it has nothing original in it, it is an amalgamation of 80s cliches, and it doesn't even have any modern style going for it.
Neither I learned anything from this movie, nor did I enjoy anything much about it.
If you want to waste an hour and a half, go ahead, hopefully at least it will put you to sleep.

I'm currently trying to watch all the old classics, and some of them really didn't age well, but this one is a classic for the ages.
I like movies that have this existential, almost mystical quality to them, movies such as The Sweet Hereafter, The Ice Storm, Sling Blade, Short Cuts. They show us how ridiculous and tragic all our lives are, but also how beautiful and inspiring they can be, when you have a good philosophical perspective.
The technical aspects of the movie are perfect - acting, cinematography, writing, music, sets.
The movie has a really wholesome atmosphere, despite the harsh reality of the story, much of this is due to the music and Johnny Depp's character's emotionally detached personality. What I'm trying to say is, if you're wondering whether you want to watch it, cause you think it'll stress you out, or it'll be unpleasant, don't worry at all, at most you'll cry from tenderness.
The movie draws you in instantly, because of the beautiful cinematography and musical score, it is escapism at it's finest. I imagine it'll resonate really well with people which lived in a small town.
Overall really good movie, won't waste your time.

This is a weird one, the movie has a near perfect execution on every front - acting, music, story, set design...; but I guess it's not my cup of tea.
I think it's just more suited towards children, and I was ready to fall asleep a couple of times during it's 2 hour runtime.
The aesthetic is old school Theater type, with almost everything you see being practical effects, which kind of makes it morally old for me.
In my opinion this movie is a good example of how everyone can perceive a situation in a good and acceptable manner, instead of being constantly outraged by other people's choices. What I'm trying to say is, this movies will be insightful for new age snowflakes, that start freaking out whenever someone lights a cigarette inside, or curses in front of a child.
Other than that, sorry, it's not one of my favorite movies, and I get that a lot of effort and expertise went into making it, but it was just too slow.
