"Amateur" is a beautiful movie about the loss of a man and how people deal with grief. While the film touches upon the five stages of grief, it also delves into a deep yearning for justice.
The story follows CIA cryptographer Charlie Heller, whose wife is tragically killed in a London terrorist attack. When he feels the official channels won't deliver the justice he seeks, the protagonist, who is by no means a trained field agent, decides to take the law into his own hands. The movie then weaves a fascinating narrative filled with chance encounters, certain accidents, and turnings of heart that suggest a guiding hand may be at play in his quest.
It is all very realistic, and the performances are excellent. The film skillfully shows how certain people, particularly within the clandestine services, can do blatantly immoral things while deluded by a morality of their own creation. What makes the film so compelling is that it doesn't just present the protagonist's actions, but deeply questions them from surprising and unexpected perspectives. The script is intelligently crafted, bringing its complex plot threads and themes together in a truly satisfying way.
"Amateur" is a very well-thought-out, well-executed, and nicely written movie. The fact that it is based on a book by Robert Littell really fleshes out the script, giving it a substance often lacking in films of this genre. The film does not dwell too much on technical details but focuses on the humanity of it all, exploring the internal struggle of a man who is not a natural killer.
It's a very good movie and is definitely worth watching. I would rate it 9 stars for fans of this genre and 7 stars for a general movie audience.

Let's be honest, Adam Driver is immensely watchable. But, the whole enjoyability of the movie is let down by the screen time devoted to the accompanying actress, 'Ariana Greenblatt' who just can't carry this pivotal role.
On the other hand, Chloe Coleman who plays the daughter and Adam's main motivation for making it back home in this survival flick is awesome and makes you root for the lead character.
The film would do better with multiple cuts with the focus being on the action and thriller sequences with the underlying familial motivation as was promised in the trailer. The trailer guys got it right.

Such an awesome concept and engaging storyline can be derailed by the screentime devoted to the no-credentials actor playing Rose Walker. So many viewers quit after Episode 7 just because of her acting or lack thereof.
This horrible performance stands in stark contrast to most of the towering acting skills displayed by the rest of the cast. This series could actually be a case study of how bad casting decisions can downright bring a great TV series to its knees.
Definitely recommend giving this series a go. Just do something else when this Rose Walker comes on screen, or you'll definitely pull all your hair out in agonizing frustration and end up with bald spots like me.
