There's the makings of a good supernatural mystery in here somewhere but sadly it doesn't really come together.
The lonely Island shrouded in most: check
The unfriendly local man with something to hide: check
The benevolent ingénue: check
The ethnic minority character who wants to explore the island alone: check
The spectre hovering in the background: check
BUT it's sadly much less than the sum.of it's parts. There's no compelling story and no real scares.
For the folks who gave up after episode 3 and then write a one star review - I was right there with you. But then I kept watching...and watching and ultimately I flat out loved this show.
Yes the protagonist is shallow and irritating to begin with. That the point. The show is her journey towards that realistion (and the journey of another key character) that is told with tenderness and creativity.
The script is incredible. The portrayal of NYC is beautiful and the performances are all stellar.
I've never written a review on IMDb before but this just made me want to recommend the show to as many people as possible. Superb.
