Hobby photographer and movie lover. Managing to watch between 40 and 70 movies a month. I love horror and thriller movies, but I watch everything - from good quality Dramas to big budget Sci-Fi, to cheesy Actions and badly acted B-movies.
While i watch basically everything, i try to be as fair as objective when i give my ratings, and to be more or less equel or close to equal for all types and genres.
Key things i take into account: script and plot, character development, cinematography, acting, VFX, sound. That being said, i may enjoy or even love a movie that is technically far from good, which will bring my rating up, but as i try to be fair for all movies, i won't give them 9 or 10. Also many technically superb movies may have lower rating in my books because i personally and subjectivelly didn't like them, but I will aknowledge their objective greatness.
Another key thing to keep in mind is that I'm more harsher towards big budget movies that to B-movies. Because Big studios have all the resources and knowledge to make a good product, and have no excuses when it's bad. B-movies will get extra points for putting extra effords and trying to make a good end product. Yet - no excuse for bad acting and bad cinematography.
My ratings go as:
1/10: Terrible movie, unwatchable or almost unwatchable. Bad everything
2/10: Very bad movie, no efford whatsoever. Some hints of potential. Also - many overhyped old classics will go there if they are with bad acting, bad VFX and flat plot.
3/10: Bottom end of mediocre movie. Watchable but doesn't have good script, doesnt have good acting.
4/10: Mediocre movie. Watchable and somewhat enjoyble. Has a lot of potential but didn't deliver.
5/10: Decent movie. Good overal idea with ok acting and execution. Plenty of small flaws that could have been better. Also entertaining movies with not great script.
6/10: Good movie, well executed with decent acting. Some minor flaws that can be fixed but overall vry enjoyable movie.
7/10: Very good movie. Technically getting closer to masterpiece with only minor flaws. Or technical masterpieces, whose story i liked, but i didn't love for subjective reasons.

From this point up we go towards technical masterpieces that i liked and movies that i love.
8/10: Superb plot and script, movie with well written story and characters, eventually plenty of well made twists. Very good acting and casting, very good cinematography and VFX for it's time.
9/10: Masterpiece movies that i liked a lot or movie that I love
10/10:Masterpiece movies that i liked a lot or movie that I love

Serengeti: Nature's Greatest Journey

  • boring 5th grade schoolbook "movie"

I love documentaries. And i know, not everything can be as good as BBC, but this was one of the most boring ones i've watched. It was literally just 3-4 sentences for each animal they show in the Serengeti. Just like reading a 5th grade biology or ecology schoolbook. Less information than kid's enciclopedia of the world.

Pretty much waste of time. I guess it's ok for a curious kid that had just started learning about animals, but i doubt that many people would appreciate such kind of movie.

Video quality and sound are decent , no complaints there. I stumbled upon this documentary purely on accident while i was searching for the new series.

  • felt more like youtube compilation

The idea is great - few episodes, each devoted to one of the bigger cults, telling their story.

But it's not exactly that. The monotonous naration makes it kinda boring, but the semi-joking script makes these cults look LESS serious. The summarization is so short you miss quite a few key moments that you'd see in other documentaries.

The whole series looks like youtube compilation. There are some footage from the cults, but most of these are just random clips and pictures placed there , some pop culture elements, older movies - putting spaceship movies clips when talking about The heaven's gate for example" , or even lamer - having 2s factory clip of HONEY being poured in a jar when they said that "this cult leader didnt allow honey and sugar consumption" . It's like watching these 2000s youtube videos when they add random image of the item/activity to each word of the song lol.

Ok, i'd take the satiric approach of "we'll teach you how to become a cult leader, that's the text book with rules" , but the whole narative really makes these cult pretty mild and just some goofy people. You hear that 900 people are dead in Jonestown, but they say it like "900 people were doing jumping jacks" . You should feel your blood chilling in your veins from some of these people, yet you just feel tad sleepy from the monotonous narative and the not-very-serous approach.

And on top of that - they put the "most terrible part" of each cult in the end, but it's like 20 seconds of it and you get end credits. You dont even get the full grasp of what bad had happened there.

If you're interested in the subject, there are so many much better documentaries on that topic, and most of these cults have at least 1 specially dedicated movie or series, full of real footage, survivors interviews and so on, instead of lame 50s movies refferences or quickly made drawings to "show you what happened" .

I thought i will watch the mobs and dictators series too, but i will probably skip that. Netflix did a bad job, yet again.

  • way too dark

The movie is somewhat generic. Not the worst horror movie you'd see, but you may notice it's not exactly original, drawing ideas from other movies (wont mention so i don't spoil your watching).

The biggest problem of this movie is that it's veeeery dark. I have good HDR TV but even then some scenes were terrible - dark and you could hardly even see what's happening. Having OLED will make it tad better but still bad. Watching this on normal cheap TV, on laptop or in the theaters will be a as good as watching it with the screen turned off lol .

Script is fine. Not great not terrible. Dialogues as well. Not much efford in them but not the worst you can see. Acting is so-so.

But here i'll say the only really positive thing about this movie - the little girl actually delivers very good acting, and one of the best ones you can see with such an young kid.

The sound is fine, and the surround sound delivers quite nicely at times.

Overall, if this movie had tad better plot and dialogues, and had muuuuuuch better lighting , i'd give it 5 or even 6/10.
