My Rating System:

1/10 - 4/10 = Negative
5/10 = Average
6/10 - 10/10 = Positive

*Depending on the degree of the flaw, a film can be marked down more than one point.

1/10: No matter how hard I try, I can't think of anything I liked about these movies whatsoever.

2/10: Movies with this rating barely have anything I liked about them. Sometimes, the only thing I can say I liked are a few minor things. However, I can't say I liked nothing about these movies.

3/10: Movies with this rating have a couple solid aspects I liked. However, the bad outweighs the good quite a bit.

4/10: Movies with this rating have several things I disliked and a fair amount of things I liked. However, the bad slightly outweighs the good and I wouldn't say they're average or okay.

5/10: Movies with this rating may have a few flaws, but there are just enough things I like about them for me not to consider them to be bad films. I wouldn't say I liked them though.

6/10: I like movies which get this rating. They may have a few flaws, but overall, I find these movies to be pretty good. I have little issue with revisiting these movies as long as it's only a few spread out viewings.

7/10: I really like movies which receive this rating. Movies with this rating usually have only one thing I disliked about them or a few minor things I disliked. I'd be okay with revisiting these movies every now and then.

8/10: I can't find anything major I disliked about these films. There may be one or two minor issues I had, but they're usually insignificant when factored against everything I liked about them. These movies may not give me a feeling of "I couldn't have enjoyed this any more". However, I have no issue with revisiting them as my opinion may possibly grow.

9/10: Like films I give 8/10 to, I can't find anything I disliked about these movies as well. I also don't have any minor issues with them. However, what sets these films apart from films I give 8/10 to is that I find more merits with them and feel a far greater connection to them. They still don't give me a sense of perfection, but they sure come close to doing so.

*A film has to be at least one year old to receive this rating.

10/10: I can't think of anything I disliked about these movies. Not only do I think these movies are perfect, but I also think they're untouchable and awe-inspiring. I doubt I could've enjoyed them anymore.

*A film has to be at least five years old and I have to watch it at least twice for it to receive this rating.

  • Not for everyone, but I really dug it.

I put off watching this one for a while as I had concerns it wouldn't live up to its potential. Maybe not for the reasons some other people have coldly dismissed it for (I'm sure this will find the right audience in the coming years), but because a lot of what I read about it from my close movie friends lead me to believe it wouldn't live up to its potential. While my somewhat low expectations helped, I'd say it stuck the landing. Here are some loose thoughts:

-I read from a handful of people there would be a jumpscare every ten minutes, but the film was actually much lighter in this area than I expected. There are numerous scenes where a moment of loud audio would disrupt an otherwise quiet scene, but I think the only reason some of these moments came off as jumpscares was due to how ambient silence filled so much of the film. Had this been shot in a conventional manner, I don't think it would get this criticism to the same degree. Taken as a whole, there were only four moments I'd count as jumpscares. Could I have done without them? Yes, but I didn't feel they were that frequent.

-Could they have shortened the film? Yes. Were most of the house shots interchangeable and repetitive? Yes. Given the atmospheric design though, I think the length and repetition captured the feeling of being stuck in a dream. You lose sight of when the dream started, are unaware you're even in a dream until you wake up, and time feels non-existent as a result. This justification makes perfect sense in the context of this film since the idea it was all just a dream was a possible interpretation to what was going on. I understand this approach will still be trying on many people's patiences, but I'd say this film is exactly what it wants to be. Any minutes cut would've simply made it more conventional.

-This does utilize a handful of horror clichés, like going into the basement, looking under the bed, kid's cartoons, and the aforementioned jumpscares. I would argue the film managed to find its singular voice in the process of navigating these hurdles though. For instance, heading into the basement and looking under your bed at night are fitting for this film since they're exactly the kinds of things we dreaded as kids. Also, while the bed sequence culminated with a jumpscare, it occurred when I least expected it (a more trite payoff would've wasted the jumpscare immediately when the camera panned back up). The kid's cartoons were a harder sell, but while I'm not sure this was the intention, I actually found them to be a comforting relief from the surrounding darkness since the lightness and warmth of them served as a contrast from it.

Anyways, I can understand why this film is as divisive as it is, but I think Ball knocked it out of the park. As a staunch avant-garde fan, this was right up my alley.

  • Weak final act, thought provoking ideas throughout.

This would've been a four star film had it not leaned so heavily into animal cruelty in the last act. The animal scenes are thematically appropriate, but I wish they used a different device to communicate the cyclical nature of oppression. As it stood, the film really left a sour taste in my mouth once I finished it. Still though, it's very good. I imagine the usage of dwarfs will be too weird for some people, but that's a brilliant storytelling device. Since the world around them feels oversized (not a single human of "regular" height is shown), the oppression extends to their surroundings, making for effective visual storytelling. Not the most subtle film around, but it makes for another worthy edition to Herzog's large body of quality films.

  • It sat well upon reflection.

It took me some time to figure out what to do with this film, but after sitting on it for a while, I've formulated justification for what initially left me cold. Like some others, I was initially bothered by how the various character dynamics (Amin's attraction to both Ophélie and Céline, or Amin's attempt to photograph Ophélie naked for an art project) didn't culminate in any meaningful way and were left unresolved by the end. Perhaps exploring this phase was the idea though. When we first met Amin, we learned he recently left medical school to focus on becoming a screenwriter and returned to his hometown for the remainder of the summer to collect himself. So, just as Amin was at a crossroad in his life and was in between two directions to go down career-wise, the relationships and people he encountered throughout his vacation were at a crossroad for him as well. Therefore, the unresolved character dynamics work at capturing Amin's headspace in the moment (keep in mind the film only spans a couple of weeks). He's simply enjoying the time in between a major transition. With Amin's concluding conversation at the beach, I took that as an indication his rest phase was coming to an end and he was preparing to take the next step in his life. Could they have told this story with half the running time? Sure, but trimming it up makes about as much sense to me as trimming up "Easy Rider". The excess and emphasis on the individual moments of life is the point. All things considered, I'd say this film was stellar. Not sure I'll check out the sequel (both the critics and audience are even more negative on it), but I'm not writing it off either.
