When you're required to know the book a show is based on to understand what is going on. I do not know the books and I'll unlikely read them. More unlikely now after I watched this show. It's just not my cup of tea.
I managed to get through the first series and the first half of the second, barely, but then got more and more confused. By the end I was almost lost.
I hadn't to wait a week (or more) in between episodes. If so I would've quit very quick.
If it hasn't been for the good acting and the great cinematography I would've stopped watching anyway.
But acting and cinematography alone aren't enough. There's such a thing like a story.
In my opinion the makers of this show have failed to tell it.

The cinematography, the props and costumes were perfect. The pace was very, very slow, I almost lost my patience.
The 'main incident' happens about 80 minutes into, all before was mostly senseless blabber to me. I take it that this wasn't a crime story rather than a picture of English society in the 30th. This considered I felt sorry for the servants and the 'upstairs' mostly are simply sickening.
I saw this film only of the appearance of Kelly MacDonald. She looked great to me and I was delighted to hear her speak. Call it fetish, I don't care, I think she's got one of the most erotic voices I've ever heard, especially with Scottish accent.
I'm no native English speaker but understand speech and write quite well. But even with subs I had a hard time to get all of the vast dialogues and to stay put. Maybe of that I didn't get the full meaning.

Bullock is such a fine actress. I'm glad they didn't do it with Angelina.
I didn't know anything about this movie before I hopped right in. I wasn't disappointed.
