  • Expectations and personal preferences

Reading reviews on here I can see that the negative ones are people that prefer specific styles of comedy only, and/or hate that Seth plays the same character every time, and/or watched it expecting it to be realistic and have dramatic depth and character depth to it. This series uses a few kinds of humor, but the most obvious is the kind that Seth is known for, and that's ok. He really makes it work well in this, and even sort of makes fun of it. I actually don't find some of his other comedies that great, usually they're too much like bad SNL episodes. Even SNL has some good ones, though. I think this series happens to be a very good one with a great combination of elements.

I think people need to stop judging/reviewing film based on what they want it to be for their own preferences and instead do so based on the film's technical quality, acting quality, and it's general story/dialogue quality in the style and genres it's representing.

The flaws I found in the series were some shaky technical camera shots, and not so great angles at times, but those didn't happen often. At least not enough to where I got annoyed. Also, I do agree that the main character Matt could have been better with a different actor, but I think Seth did well enough that I was still very entertained. I don't mind that he plays the same character types because it's often who the character is anyway that he's casted to be. I think people forget that actors can often be typecasted to play the same types of roles, or just choose to do roles that they know they can do their best at. There are many different kinds of actors, all with different ranges and abilities.

I think focusing on how something is unrealistic or when characters make stupid choices is pointless with this series. They're not trying to be realistic or have smart characters lol. They're literally making absurd jokes about the industry and playing as caricatures of their roles or themselves. I love how the show does so many references to older movies/shows in every episode. Some are very obvious to recognize like the Chinatown style episode, but a lot probably go over people's heads unless they know the reference materials well.

I think you can like a show and not like any of the characters as people. Many people seem to want to see elements of themselves in characters, or have someone to "root for", but I think it can be just as entertaining to see different perspectives and enjoy characters for how stupid, cringe, evil, etc. That they are. Also, just because a comedy is not the style you prefer, that doesn't automatically make it lesser in quality. This series has a bit of several kinds of comedy in it which I think some people miss because they're too focused on trying to find things to hate, because one thing they saw/heard annoyed them.

A lot of people have become black and white lately on everything, and most things are usually grey. For example, I hate that some people in the film industry (or anyone in general) can be super rich and privileged. Not everyone in the industry is, though. A lot of actors actually don't make that much money, a lot can't even afford a house. Another thing to consider is that all humans contribute to the culture around them, we the fans elevate people into the celebrity that brings them that wealth by engaging with their content and/or buying it. We the people have to vote or revolt for the changes to stop things like wealth hoarding from happening. We have to set the limits together so things can be more fair for all of us.

  • I'm devoted to the books, but this is amazing!

Normally I am very much someone that prefers film based on books to stick to the books as much as possible. There have been very few exceptions I have found that were still really well done. As soon as I saw the huge differences in this show compared to the books I immediately was pissed off haha. I am a HUGE fan of the books, to the point where I was so angry when the Queen of the Damned movie atrocity was made. They took one of the best books in the series (the entire origin story of vampires) and turned it into one big music video that left out EVERYTHING about the origins of the vampires. I stuck with this new show though, as I was wanting a show I could at least get into while I waited for my other shows to come back.

After watching all of season 1, and now watching up to season 2 episode 6 currently, I can 100% say that I think Anne Rice would of loved this adaptation and that any fans of her vampire series (if they give it a real chance) can see how amazing it is as well.

The story has had new life brought into it, and it has been changed into something wonderful. The writing is great, the characters are so much fuller than the original books even. There is sooo much more depth to everything in the story than what the books have. There are a few changes to the abilities of the vampires that I felt did not fit well with their weaknesses being what they are (or make sense storywise, as they contradict in silly ways), and I felt that they could of easily left out those changes and have things be just as good. That is the only reason I decided to give a 9 instead of a 10.

Overall I feel this is a great series, and the people that have contributed to making it have really kept to the feelings and ideas that the original books encompassed. I highly suggest fans of the books pretend that this is something completely new and just enjoy the ride, because it is definitely worth it. Anyone else that hasn't read the books, I hope you give this a decent chance and watch all the way through. The second season is even better than the first.
