The atmosphere of the film is excellent and unique. I am sure that filming in that mountainous area, in snowy weather, was a real challenge both for the crew behind the camera and for the actors. Still, the result is almost flawless. (I say "almost" because, for example, in the final scene when Dr. Yousef's car cannot go further and he continues on foot, it is obvious that the snow is neither fresh nor deep, but rather frozen or shallow.)
The houses, the livestock farms, the office building, the camp, the costumes, and the makeup are all remarkable.
The performances are strong-especially Amin Hayayi.
The casting is also excellent, with actors such as Ladan Mostoufi and Majid Salehi.
Unfortunately, the story itself is weak. A screenplay should serve as a backbone that connects all these fine elements, but here it lacks depth. The character of Yousef, the character of Khalil, the subplot about his daughter's escape, even the love between Rana and Yousef (whose dialogue sometimes drifts toward Instagram clichés) all remain underdeveloped or treated superficially. All the ingredients are there to tell these stories in the best way, but sadly, there is little to narrate.
That said, considering the current state of Iranian movies, I cannot give it less than 7.
And I look forward to seeing more films as different and daring as this one.
Thank you.
