For anyone that knows the premises and the past versions, the Roses is nothing but a love story veering into dark comedy fueled by domestic drama and resentment slowly turning a marriage into nuclear material. Olivia Coleman and Benedict Cumberbatch truly take an honest script and turn it into a hilarious showdown that really has its moments and digs into emotional depths that I found balanced, revelatory and fairly thought-provoking.
Sadly, it seems like two movies are mushed together into one, and only one of them is smart and fun. The other one, carried by the secondary characters, is just... poor, both in acting, writing and comedic timing. It is just mind boggling how, from one scene to another, we go from subtly yet dark humour to... say, American pie-esque comedy.
