When this series came out, I was completely riveted. My father amassed a huge collection of baseball books that I read religiously. It was such an experience to get to see video of the all-time greats and to hear their back stories.
I see a lot of comments about east coast bias, but keep in mind that up until the Dodgers moved west, Kansas City was the western border of MLB. So NY and Boston truly were the center of the baseball universe.
From 1967-2016, baseball had been my favorite sport, by far. They lost me after that. Everyone just swings as hard as they can, throws as hard as they can. It's either strikeout or home run. The nuance, strategy and artistry are gone from the game.
It's laughable to see batters hitting under .200 to stand there and watch a home run, bat flip, then preen around the bases like they've done something special.
A few things that haven't aged well, Costas and Crystal are so narcissistic I have to fast forward through their segments. Also, I get that MLB was biased and had racist policies. We just didn't need to have it drilled mercilessly into us.
Overall, the documentary is a national treasure and is still a solid watch.
