Based on reviews here, you'd think people were expecting some kind of horror classic.
This was a VERY low budget film, made by amateur filmmakers in a rush to be the first cash in on an IP that just hit public domain.
It's not good by any means. It wasn't well written, acted, directed, or edited. However, none of this was a secret before it was released and should have been expected.
If these reviewers would have had any sense in their noggins whatsoever and gone into this movie knowing all that, they would have found a fun, bad, schlocky movie that was at least worth the less than 90-minute runtime...assuming they weren't foolish enough to have paid to see it in the theater. But that is on them for overlooking all the obvious signs thrown in their faces.

I read through reviews here and see something that all the poor reviews have in common. And it seems that commonality is that they do not understand that this movie is fantasy. I am glad to see they are in the minority, but it bothers me, and this review is for those people and other wanting to go that route.
Each and every one says that either they don't buy the time travel mechanics or that they don't buy the actions the characters take.
Yet somehow, they are willing to accept every wonky time travel mechanic and their problematic situations, including sometimes not even following their own rules, in movies from Terminator to Quantum Leap to 12 Monkeys to Looper and everything between without batting an eye. Manipulating your brain into time traveling is as believable as a time machine.
As for the actions the characters take, well, see the above comment as well. But also very easily believable in context if you paid attention the movie. The excellent novel this was based on by Richard Matheson (I am Legend, What Dreams May Come, Stir of Echoes, many classic Twilight Zone episodes including what is probably the most famous one, among other things) came about after he saw the picture of an old time actress on the wall...at a hotel..and he fell in love with her via the picture. So he set about writing a story about what would happen if it were possible to meet.
Clearly for Richard this is what happened and is love at first sight, so what these reviews are saying is that they do not believe in the concept.
As far as Elise her actions are explained very well in the movie and are believable in context. So I'll walk through the points here.
Addressing his "stalkerish" behavior and how she would never accept it, let's not forget that she initiated first contact coming to him when she was old and set him on this course and her "is it you" when he does meet her in the past clearly sets that she is open to his advances but has to play cautious due to protocols.
Which leads us to how she could fall in love with him so quickly. It is explained that Mr. Robinson 'claimed" her when she was just 16 and that she has been very sheltered, protected, and controlled for a long time so this is a first love and new experience (like a teen's first love but at an older age).
Not only that, but she was pushed to it by Robinson's own insecurity and controlling behavior. He told her it was going to happen and tried to make her fear it because it would destroy her, not because he believed this scenario would happen but because he believed that any man might whisk her away and destroy him and everything "he had worked for" by losing control of her. So in essence Robinson pushed her more into love with Richard and destroyed himself and her in the process.
Why would she wait for him forever instead of moving on? Well it is a fantasy and also meeting and losing someone you fell in love with in that manner would probably have a dramatic effect on your life and make it hard to move on...don'tcha think?
How did she know he was from the future and where to find him? Well, she didn't know he was from the future, but she did know his name, where he was from, and that he was a playwright. We know that he was a relatively successful one at that. Being a former stage actress, maybe, just maybe she heard in the paper, news, or just circles, that a playwright from Chicago named Richard Collier existed and her go "hmmmm", and go seek him out. And when she got there and saw him, knew it was him, and that nothing could happen at that point in time so gave him the watch to start the cycle over again?
This was an excellently written novel and movie, both written by Matheson. The acting is very good. The director did a good job bringing it to life. The only thing I can see that would cause people to dislike it so much is that they don't want their time travel movie to be a love story, no matter how much they claim otherwise because they will accept more ridiculousness from other films without complaint. Or maybe they are just dead inside.

That being said, maybe more film makers should use this method. It would probably help out the Jurassic World or Transformer franchises to save money to get the same level of quality. I can trade in the CGI effects to see what these people would give us in return. Can't be worse.
