  • A new life for Ritesh Deshmukh

The reason for this review is not so much the film as the outstanding performance of Ritesh Deshmukh! I was so impressed with his understated persona, the minute changes of expression - he had truly done well to say the least.

Ajay Devgn sleep walked through the film. His performance was a far cry from the energy he had in Raid.

Avni Kapoor had no role. Supriya Pathak was and is always outstanding, in whatever role she essays.

The editing could have been better. The music was nothing that was foot tapping or melodious.

It was interesting to see though, how this plot unravelled Worth watching if you have nothing better to do!

  • A superb 'no holds barred' depiction of a family in showbiz

I found this mini series on the Roshans very endearing. I was not a fan of Hrithik Roshan but after watching the episode on him, everything about him made so much more sense. The magic starts with Roshan, the grandfather, the music director - his story on how he came to Mumbai and eventually made beautiful music. The story shifts to his two sons and the last episode is about Hrithik. None of the Roshans, including the wives, were hesitant to speak about their highs and lows. At this point, I must compliment Shashi Ranjan for being able to draw out these individuals into telling their stories. The four episodes are very smooth, not at all boring and it gives us an insight into the psychology of these men and it tells us how human, celebrities are.

  • Is this really the best we can do???!!!

Just back from watching 'Kalki 2898 AD'.

I am still reeling from all the noise that permeated the movie.

I went thinking that one would be able to watch a tale well told, interweaving the Mahabharata with Sci Fi.

What I found was a mish mash of the Mahabharata, Harry Potter, some Ramayana like visuals, a bit from "The Handmaid's Tale" and a lot of Marvel Comic type stuff.

The first half was quite slow. The world is a battered place. The Ganga has dried up. Kashi is where everybody lives because it is the last viable city on Earth. Things happen that are not logically connected.

Prabhas is charming but at times his cavalier attitude did seem out of place.

Mr Bachchan does not make his appearance until 1.5 hours of the movie is over. He is Ashwatthama, all old, battered and in bandages (suggesting the passage of time as per Shri Krishna's curse, I guess)and reminds one of Obi-Wan-Kenobi.

Deepika is SUM80 which later gets translated to 'Sumati'. She is carrying the saviour (Kalki) and has to be protected.

Kamalahasan plays the role of "Supreme Yaskin" which, to me, looked like Voldemort when he was seeking to be rejuvenated with the horcruxes.

With all this going, I will say one thing - I stayed in my seat. I was curious to know what happened to SUM80. After all, the hope of the world was within her.

There are many sequences that were not logically in sequence but in a Marvel movie like this, one can always attribute some sense to what happened.

I wish the beauty of the epic had been brought out a little more clearly and the story woven around that. Can't be too difficult, I should think.

I get the feeling that this turned into a pot boiler because these days pot boilers are money spinners.

Should you go and watch? Well if you have three and a half hours with nothing better to do, then you may want to take a turn at the theatre.
