Sure, it's inspired by The Handmaid's Tale, but it's also a timely mirror to frightening political scenarios around the world, in which women's reproductive choices are being dictated by patriarchs. Ignore the fanatic criticism in some of the reviews below, which only see this as a "Hindu-bashing" series. It's secondary to the story of many societies that are developing a sort of moral absolutism as a growing backlash to modernity, economic empowerment, and freedom of thought and lifestyle. It's a way for those in our societies who are frightened of what they don't know to retain or assert power over others they see as a threat to their sense of self. Timely, important and culturally relevant to everyone, not just Indians.
I have joined IMDb just to write this review. I watched S1 last year. At first, I wasn't sure if I was on board; I disliked the protagonist, but she was also very magnetic (like watching a car crash). By the end of S1, though, I was hooked. This is a deeply flawed and misunderstood human being who reflects so many neuroses of the young and single, and yet she is hilarious and wonderful to be friends with. (That fourth wall!)
Season 2. Now Season 2 is an absolute game changer and you know it within the first 5 minutes of the first episode. This series is the most perfect piece of television I have ever seen. The writing is flawless; the timing of the ensemble cast is like a Swiss watch; the sexiness and the hilarity are through the roof. It is also dark, and sad, and thoughtful. It explores the pain and the aftermath of loss: of parents, children, love, faith, and youth. But in doing so, it gives rise to one amazing thing: the promise of Hope.
Never, ever have I seen such a beautifully crafted finale. It is an instant classic if there ever was one. And if Waller-Bridge didn't have legions of fans before, she will after the world has watched S2.
THANK YOU BBC for always taking risks to showcase the most creative and original voices!
