  • Great spy spoof with a stellar cast and brilliant music

I have to give this James Bond spoof a score of 7/10 for two reasons - although the plot is laughable, the film has two winning features (1) the stellar cast, including some of the very best stars of the 1960s, all giving their very best, depite the terrible script, and (2) the very best (Oscar nominated) music for any spy spoof film.

Even more than fifty years after production the film is fun - an enjoyable romp (although no-one bothered to do the maths about a child of Mata Hari, who was executed in 1917, so her daughter must have been at least 50 in 1967!!) Anyway, I enjoy watching this spoof loosely based on the Ian Fleming original, even including reference to the chair with the seat remoed.

  • One of the very best War films ever made

"Do not despair for Johnny Head-in-air He sleeps as sound as Johnny Underground Fetch out no shroud for Johnny Head-in-Clouds And keep your tear for him in after years Better by far for Johnny the bright star To keep your head and see his children fed"

A poignant and well crafted late WWii film that really touches the right buttons in every way.

It is a film about Halfpenny Green Airfield - not the aerodrome near Wolverhampton but a fictitious airfield down South during WWII with first RAF then USAAC/USAAF personnel using the same facilities.

Extremely well crafted film, makes you like the main characters and feel truly upset with the deaths of those that do not return from missions.

And, of course, "Under the wash basin, you will find a pot"

I love watching this film - it is one of the best WWII ever made, and it makes me both cry and smile.

Oh, and WHAT a stellar cast! Some of the best actors ever all gathered in one film.

  • A simply beautiful film

This was a YouTube recommendation - I wasn't too bothered until I realised it contained Academy Award Winner Sidney Poitier, double Academy Award Winner Dianne Wiest and Emmy Award winner Mary Louise Parker, so I decided to give it a try. WHAT A RECOMMENDATION! Noah Dearborn, a carpenter, is a simple man. He doesn't even have electricity on his farm. Unfortunately, his land lies in the middle of a plot designated for a soulless shopping centre, so the developers want to get rid of him. At first no-one believes he really is Noah Dearborn, as he doesn't appear old enough to be the man born in 1908. Then, the contract lead for the developers ask his lawyer to assess Noah Dearborn, and no-one hears from the lawyer for several weeks. What could have happened to the man? Then the lead developer asked his psychiatrist girlfriend to assess Noah, because if he is incapable of rational thought his land can be taken over by the local authority (and consequently can be sold to the developers). She speaks with Noah and is troubled by what she discovers. Then the developers decide to try underhand tactics instead. Truly, not a great deal happens, like in Local Hero (another favourite of mine) but the whole ensemble produces a beautiful film, acted by three of my favourite actors. It has leapt straight into my personal top ten of best films ever and I am sure to watch it many times again. If you like heart-warming stories, this is definitely a film to watch - if you only like action-adventures then you should probably try something else, but you will have missed out!
