Okay, this is a Star Trek remake of "Enemy Mine," but dang...what a great remake it is. Ortegas once again proves to be a wonderful character and her interactions with the Gorn female is quite moving. And the twist ending (which I will not give away) caps the episode brilliantly. I was also impressed by the art direction and CGI effects. A really solid effort from all concerned.
I'm loving season 3. Love the characters and the insightful psychology. These are real people in real situations acting in a real way. Many scenes had me in tears, especially the cargo bay scene towards the end. The scriptwriters have created a wonderful sense of drama--they know when to move the plot forward and they know when to savor moments when individual characters can reveal themselves. Of course, without a fine acting ensemble, their efforts would fall short. Fortunately, this is a terrific group of veterans and newcomers who know how to make the story come alive. Season 1 was okay. Season 2 had fine moments. Season 3 blossoms.
There are many things that I have enjoyed about Star Trek Discovery. Chief among them is the wonderful group of characters. Each individual is a totally drawn being. We discover who they are, sometimes quickly, sometimes over many episodes. By this point in the series--approaching its grand finale--we have the pleasure of seeing them interact when they are challenged with a new adventure--and we "get" what they do and why they do it. This episode shows the main cast interacting with one of Star Trek's favorite tropes: The wise person in charge of an all-important archive. It's so much fun to see the Captain and her crew interact with the Librarian. And it's even more fun and engaging to see how the crew unravels a major plot point. I love these characters and will miss them.
