The Greatest Showman, directed by Michael Gracey, is a star-studded musical which blesses our eyes with Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Zendaya
The movie starts with the character of Hugh Jackman, P.T Barnum, as a poor child who dreams of making it big to marry the girl of his dreams, Charity - the daughter of the man that he works for
As it progresses, we see P.T marry Charity and have two wonderful daughters all the while trying to make it big to prove Charity's father that he's a husband worthy of having. P.T has an idea of opening a museum, which fails but her daughters suggest that his museum needs more life and "alive" things. So, P.T auditions for people with unique characteristics that will attract audiences and sees his museum transform into a circus.
Now there are some technical and narrative problems in the overall film. To begin with, there is a clear lack of depth in plot and story. For instance, the film ditches exploring various characters' lives. For instance, it barely skims over the main plot points to give us a summarised, not to mention historically inaccurate, view of P.T Barnum's life. So what could have been an adventure of a film, the writers instead chose to make it appeal to a mass-audience and in the process gave us a hardly memoriable story.
Secondly, I can't help but say it, that the movie uses its songs only to tighten it grip on the audiences' attention. The musical numbers were forgettable, loud and for the most part glossy. Although, the choreography was decent if not brilliant.
The fact that most of the acting performances were too sweet-mouthed and cringy also never helped TGS's cause. Zac Efron managed to shine, Zendaya as well, but Hugh Jackman gave a very ordinary performance and relied on his star power for the most part. Most dialogues were melodramatic and the presence of the extras struggled to contribute to the feel-goody nature of the film. The screenplay had some cliched plot points: a love triangle; the rise, fall and eventual rise of P.T Barnum. The predictability created disinterest and caused the film to fall flat on its wheels by the time the painfully long third act even began.
I'm an avid lover of Indian movies, especially comedies. I always find myself exploring more and more films. India has produced some great comedies: Hera Pheri, Phir Hera Pheri, Dhol, Dhamaal, Deewane Huye Pagal, Hungama, and the list can go on. On the other side of this however, the writer duo Sajid-Farhad has done its best to write screenplays for the worst Indian comedies ever. Housefull 3 is a film full of childish jokes and gags. It has a ridiculous plot, a no-brainer story, and it tries extremely hard to be funny, but not one time does it try to be good. Two of the male lead has a disability. Sandy becomes 'Sundy' whenever he hears the word 'Indian', and this is as cringe-worthy as it sounds. Ritesh's character mispronounces some words, for example 'Dolat' and 'Aurat'. The female leads do literal translations of English sentences and this ends up confusing the other characters in the film, and makes me want to tear my eyes out. There was no sense of direction in this film. The film is directed by Sajid-Farhad Samji, who wrote the first garbage that came to their minds, and said 'Hey, let's turn this into a film'. I am surprised no one tried to stop them. Every actor was doing his/her whole thing, there was no sense of coordination. The acting was beautifully terrible. The lead actors are at least 10-15 years older than the lead actresses, and every actor was cast because of their looks and their fan-following. None of the lead actresses can act, I mean in the whole film all I could see Nargis Fakhri do was bend up and down trying to explain stuff either to her dad, or her boyfriend with her perky lips meanwhile Jaqueline was busy showing her thighs. This is Akshay's worst performance I have seen and I have seen the best and worst of him. He didn't even try. It's like every crew member was concerned with his/her paycheck. And let's face it, Abishek and Ritesh could never act. Meanwhile I don't know what hit Boman Irani's head throughout the whole film. The cinematography was okay. It captured the beauty of the locations, but didn't even try to do something special. The dialogue was absolutely crap. The screenplay was genuinely horrible. The characters are unbelievable, their stories are unbelievable, and the jokes aren't funny, except if you're a 5 year old. On one side of Indian comedies is Neeraj Vora, and on the other far side, we have this duo that has swore to never even try to make something genuine. Most of the film's core problems lie in its screenplay. People really need to get their heads together, and start valuing the great films and bashing films like these, because if a film like Housefull 2 can get a third installment, meanwhile Hera Pheri 3 rests on the bookshelf, then I don't really see Indian comedies going anywhere.
Okay to start off I had been waiting for this movie since the news came out last year. This was probably my most awaited film this year and turned out to be the biggest disappointment. So the film is 1hr:16min long, which is a very good length, but the first 28 minutes, were almost unrelated, unconnected to the rest of the film. Maybe they wanted to add more depth to the character of Barbara Gordon, and show her relationship with Batman, but in reality to extend the runtime from 44mins. So they have sex, yep. Also the scene is totally unexpected. Also, my MAIN CONCERN is with the character Paris Francesco. At first I thought he might be our Joker in this film and somehow this film isn't hanging in with the comics. A sociopath, talks a lot, has eyebrows and a long face like the Joker, a wide grin. But then for the rest of the film he disappears. His character was the most pointless characters I have ever seen in an animated Batman film. Moving on, the story wasn't great but the script was even worse. I mean the dialogue felt forces, some lines were added only to fill the film quota. The music was okay, the direction was...mehh okay. The characters could have been voiced with more realism. The Animation sucked though. The one thing I sort of liked about this film was the ending, it was a bit of a cliffhanger, though it is different from the comics. The ending saves me from giving this film a 3 tbh.
