After finally getting a chance to view this film, I decided that many people don't like it because they're "not supposed to." To admit Rosie O Donnell can be funny, to enjoy some attractive bodies on display in a mainstream comedy, to enjoy some moments of erotic pleasure, and to appreciate that there's actually a bit of heart behind such a quirky story, would mean that we've somehow betrayed some of Marshall's more well-received works such as Pretty Woman, or that we've violated the rule that says we're only allowed to appreciate Dana Delany in movies like Tombstone. The truth is that this movie is not poorly done, but it is VERY niche. It combines crime-caper comedy with light erotica, allowing you to laugh one minute and leer the next. Someone who enjoys doing both will find this movie to be a real gem (even if they never admit it out loud). In that sense, it is utterly unique and is certainly going to be limited in its appeal. But don't conflate limited appeal with crappy film making. This movie achieves what it sets out to do and it does so with aplomb. So, if the premise sounds fun and a little naughty, then I have good news for you...the movie itself delivers on both fronts. So, enjoy it. It's OKAY.
I have to express my appreciation to the creative team behind Bloodlines. My wife and I went there to be entertained by the suspense, over the top kills, and creative traps, and that's what we got. We weren't lectured. The movie didn't seek to expand our cultural awareness, present the plight of some oppressed group of people, or tell me what a terrible person I am for what I believe. It just gave us a rollicking bloody good time at the movies by delivering a fun horror film firing on all cylinders. If you want more movies like this, show up for them when they're made. Otherwise, they'll continue to be the exception, not the rule.
When you finally get the reveal, it just ends up being yet another Hollywood slam session against Judeo Christian values. They hate this country and everything that gave rise to its founding. It's a shame, because it started out with promise, featured an intriguing premise and the cast was a capable group of talented young actors. But in the end, they just couldn't help themselves. They had to attack the good, the true, and the beautiful. It seems that, in order to see good horror nowadays that simply wants to entertain you, you have to go back to movies that predate 2010. Anything after that, and you're going to be preached at. That said, the latest Final Destination was a fun ride that had no agenda other than entertainment. Definitely recommended.
