Such a great idea, and so well acted, with amazing special effects. BUT... the film left a really nasty taste in the mouth, with the completely over-the-top and unnecessarily violent ending.
Credibility was stretched from the start, when a fully-formed body bursts out of Demi Moore's spine - the result of just one injection! The gaping wound in her back was sewn up again, but what happened to her vertebrae? Towards the end of the film the inconsistencies multiply, but the ending sequence is exceptionally nasty - and totally unbelievable.
The director's hatred of men was apparent throughout; every single male character was made to look as disgusting as possible - especially poor Denis Quaid as the sleazy TV producer. With a less heavy-handed approach this movie could have made its point so much more effectively.

Just saw this for the second time after a 40-year gap and can confirm it's a gem. Borowczyk's vision of medieval France is full of authentic touches - costumes, sets, artifacts, music; giving one the feel of really being in the C13th. Contrary to what one reviewer here said, there is plenty of great music in the film - all played on authentic period instruments, with the musicians on set. The attention to detail is phenomenal, and the story is engaging. Although the plot is somewhat bleak with a high body count at the end, it manages to be funny as well - I loved all the business surrounding the kings retinue of ugly monks, one of whom pops a slice of sausage into his mouth every time the camera focuses on him.
